I've noticed a change in my two favorite search engines. AltaVista and AlltheWeb. Both now have the "yahoo" name on them and neither one seems to function like they did when they became my favorites. AltaVista used to have a special knack for finding specialized technical scientific stuff that normal people have no interest in. I'm talking about the kind of stuff a grad student looks for when writing a thesis on metallurgy or power inverter efficiency or other queries of the arcane.
AlltheWeb.com was my favorite for grabbing photos. Lets say I want a photo...any photo will do...so long as it is a pic of a lime green 1963 Studebaker. AlltheWeb had a search function that would scour the net for such a photo. Every photo of such a car that exists would instantly be at my fingertips. Not anymore. They seem to have removed the photo search option. AlltheWeb.com now also has the "yahoo" name on it. Yahoo seems to be ruining everything.
So who Knows which search engines are the best for the above two examples?
I recently read that Yahoo was shutting down Alta vista, they must have bought them a while ago.
iirc, the AltiVista creator/founder is a freeper.

I can’t tell you if they are any good I just googled “best search engine for science”.
Cool dude. But...which search engine did you use when you did that? jk. I never thought about using that as a query.
Yep. Paul Flaherty, my brother.
Goodsearch.com is the engine I use. It’s a very good search engine, and you can name a “charity” when you sign up. GS gives a donation to the charity you name. Second Amendment Sisters is a named “chairty” on the site, and we get a few pennies every time someone names us. As we are a non-profit org, we appreciated the couple of hundred dollars we got from them last year.
I used AtlaVista for a long time until Yahoo bought them.
Switched back to Dogpile. Like it pretty well.
Ocassionally when I cannot find it with other means I resort to Google.
The good options are getting smaller.
what about photos?
A when Google went pro-ChiCom, several FReepers suggested Scroogle.org as an alternate search engine. Unlike Dogpile, Scroogle strains out the spam with a delightful bonus: the Google punks know that you're unhappy with Google (Don't be evil, LMAO!) policy with each and every Scroogle search.
Cheers,
OLA
Don’t know, I have never tried a photo search.
I would think that the lack of naming convention would make that pretty hard.
I have used Scroogle too, but default on Dogpile.
Dogpile at least is not against Christian and Jewish symbols on appropriate holidays and patriotic symbols too.
Greetings TF:
Unfortunately, Dogpile is overloaded with spam. And Scroogle doesn’t do the dopey holiday graphics.
Give me content.
Cheers,
OLA
I have not noticed it, but I am running an obscure browser and old version of Redhat Linux, with Java scripts turned off. Don't even remember a pop-up.
