title:Tree octopus exposes internet illiteracy

Is this creature capable of exposing shocking internet illiteracy?

Donald Leu, a researcher from the University of Connecticut, conducted a U.S. Department of Education-funded study of internet literacy among so-called “digital natives,” fabricating the tree octopus to test students’ ability to evaluate information they find on the internet.

Researchers asked students to find out information about the endangered Pacific Northwest tree octopus. Students had no problem locating a Web site dedicated to the cause, http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/ “but insisted on the existence of the made-up story, even after researchers explained the information on the website was completely fabricated,” according to a press release.

The take away lesson here is that the government lies and will go the whole nine yards to create an illusion to support their lies. Soooooo, kiddies, you really want the government in control of your doctors, nurses and hospitals?

Cf. Putois by Anatole France, in the inimitable 50 Great Short Stories.

He replied gravely, 'The whole of Saint-Omer believes in the existence of Putois. Could I be a good citizen and deny it? One must think well before suppressing an article of universal belief.'

( Putois was an imaginary handy-man who appeared to a new servant who had never heard of him. )

This is what we get for giving education to the Federal government. Unless we destroy the democrat fascist party and the academic rewards system they've turned universitites into now we'll never get another chance because there won't be enough literate people to even understand the issues.

I believe it. That's because I read it on the internet, so it must be true.

No, wait....

My daughter teaches music to grades K-8 in a parochial school. The older children were supposed to turn in essays on music styles. Several students turned in nearly identically worded essays copied directly from Wikipedia. Their grades showed it, and the howling could be heard all the way to DC when she caught them cheating.

Pity the teachers of these kids when grading essays. The Internet makes it easy for them to lift information.

What could you do with $21M??? Fraud begets fraud.

The information below is reprinted from the Neag School of Education's Fall 2000 Spotlight which features news and events.

In 1999, Donald J. Leu, an education professor at Syracuse University and a nationally prominent specialist in reading and Internet technologies, was hired to become the John and Maria Neag Chair in Literacy and Technology. The chair was made possible by the $21 million gift from UConn alumnus Ray Neag and is named in memory of his parents.

Leu was impressed by his first visit to UConn. "I flourish in positive environments," he says. "And I sensed tremendous enthusiasm and a commitment to providing support to schools in this country. There is an incredible array of talent at the Neag School of Education and with each new colleague I meet, the more excited I am at being here."

Leu, who holds a joint appointment in the departments of curriculum and instruction and educational psychology, has hit the ground running. He has just received a $5.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation for a five-year, large-scale project which will be a collaboration between UConn, Vanderbilt University, the University of Georgia and the University of Illinois.

The project's main goal is to significantly raise the reading ability of young children by improving teacher education. Leu and his fellow researchers hope to achieve this by developing and studying the use of multimedia cases of teachers using best practices in literacy instruction. The cases will be delivered with streaming video over the Internet and used in pre-service education programs at over 100 universities around the country.

"Instead of diminishing the need for traditional reading and writing skills, these become even more important with the Internet," he says. "As the John and Maria Neag Chair in Literacy and Technology, it is my hope to provide the leadership needed to better prepare our teachers for the profound changes taking place."

I saw one in a museum once...right next to a Jackalope. That rabbit had the biggest set of antlers I’d ever seen.
