Spaceweather - CORONAL HOLE
NASA ^ | Jan. 30, 2011 | SpaceWeather.com

CORONAL HOLE: A dark croissant-shaped hole has opened up in the sun's atmosphere, and it is spewing a stream of solar wind into space. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of the vast opening during the early hours of Jan. 30th:

Researchers call this a "coronal hole." Solar rotation is turning the coronal hole toward Earth. The stream of solar wind pouring from it will swing around and hit our planet in early February, possibly sparking polar magnetic storms. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras between Feb. 2nd and 4th.

Saw it. Not a happy ending for the people who remained.

If I don’t get a chance to say how much I’ve enjoyed the ride, It’s been real!

(can’t really prepare for the wrath of the Sun)

We’re expecting a little below zero tonight and 30-40 below zero F tomorrow night (intermontane basin on the Rockies). ...camping construction situation in a remote area here, but we’ll be fine (energy system design and extreme cold weather survival nerds). We’re going to play “The Day After Tomorrow,” as we’ll see vehicles and plumbing systems down in the nearest town (displaced suburbanites there) but not here.

It was -35 F at 04:00 this morning. We’re expecting near the same tonight. The passive solar heating through the glazed parts of this construction dwelling (modified travel trailer) was unusually effective today, while the high here was -5 F. Hot!

OMG.

It's 25 here in central TX and I thought we had it hard!

Today is a good day to die.
I didn't say for whom.

Wish it were that warm here. It was -3 actual when I left for work at 6am. Toss in the 20 inches of snow we got and the -15 wind chills and you've got a pretty interesting day.

Best,

L
