I'm looking for some opinions out there. I was talking politics with one of my employees the other day and we got onto the topic of school vouchers. He's a huge proponent of them but I'm a fairly strong Libertarian so I'm against mandatory or public schooling of any form. He is very passionate about it but isn't very good at arguing his points and recommended I looked through here for some enlightenment.
I searched around a bit but didn't find a lot of arguments one way or another and I was wondering if anyone could give me a good concise argument for why vouchers would be better than completely pulling the government out of any sort of education what so ever. Or even point me to some resources where I could read up more on this theory myself.
If government schools were immediately shut down tomorrow, the **same** children who are getting an education today, would get one tomorrow. Why?
Because little education or schooling happens in the government K-12 school. The only thing a government school does ( academically) is send home a free curriculum for the parents and child to follow in the home! .
We already live in a world where, yes, most of children are warehoused on a daily basis, but they are absolutely not being educated in these prison-like structures .
Once you realize public schooling is better than no public school funding.
Why is it, that Americans assume that any learning whatsoever happens in a government school? Hm? Where are the controlled studies that **prove** this?
In questioning parents of academically successful children, I have ( anecdotally) found that the home habits of homeschooled and institutionalized children are nearly identical. Both homeschooled and institutionalized academically successful children spent about the **same** amount of time doing homework, have predicable home routines, and enriching extracurricular activities.
I have observed that if there is an academically successful children his habits and the values of his parents in the home are nearly identical.
If there is an academically successful child, that child is being homeschooled or afterschooled. The government school has little to nothing to do with the success except to take credit for their high standardized test scores, and blame the parents, society, or the legislators when kid do poorly.
