Toque with detachable 'beard' popular

TORONTO, A Canadian man with little facial hair says his invention of the Beardo, a cold-weather toque with a detachable knitted beard, is selling nicely.

Jeff Phillips, 31, told the Toronto Star the acrylic beard with a hole for the mouth is held on by Velcro and is detachable or can be folded up inside the toque.

He said he came up with the idea while snowboarding in 2006 in British Columbia and began selling the Beardo online in November.

One of his Toronto clients, Andy Ye, said apart from keeping most of his face warm, the Beardo doesn't set off alarms in banks and stores as a full ski mask might.

Phillips said some men who can't grow real beards enjoy the opportunity to wear one.

"I have the facial hair of a preteen girl but I think the advantage a Beardo may hold over a natural beard is that a Beardo needs no maintenance," he told the Star.

He said he is expanding the line this year to include more colors and smaller sizes for children.
