A few moments before 4 p.m. on a recent Wednesday, nine men ages 25 to 67, filed into a small, bare office in San Anselmo, arranged their chairs in a circle, sat down and prepared to cry.
Few knew each other. Some hadn't cried since they were young boys and wanted to learn how to cry again. A few cried often, and were thrilled to have found a safe space to do so.
These were the Men of Tears.

Real man cry for many good reasons in private and in public for different reasons.
I will say if a man has not cried since he a young boy and now middled age, he might have issues which seems to be the crux of this article.
Just rent “Brian’s Song” and “Old Yeller” from Netflix, and if that doesn’t work, pepper spray yourself.
Tears??? That’s what a routine prostate exam is for. When you pick a primary care physician, remember, slender fingers!

"You know what makes me sad? YOU DO! Maybe we should chug on over to Mamby-Pamby Land where maybe we can find some self-confidence for you, you jackwagon! . . . Tissue? . . . Crybaby. . . ."
Oh good grief. Real women don’t want crybabies.
Nothing makes me more queasy than seeing a man cry. Boehner is completely driving me crazy - I can’t take anything he says seriously now.
Mental illness.
haha! I actually laughed out loud on that one Tij. That’s good stuff.
These men that go and learn to cry again, I will never understand. I cry in private and public, for example, my last grandparent on my dad’s side passed away last year, and at the funeral, I cried, not much, but I did. She was a christian so I know she went to a better place. Real men cry when needed, but man up when it’s time to man up.
I agree. When you baptize your first baby. When you see her off to boot camp 18 years later. When you learn your father has cancer. When you put an Eagle Scout badge on your son. There are plenty of suitable times for a man to cry.
I'm not sure a Men's Crying Group is the best way to help those who are miserable and repressed, though.
He cries.
She sends him money.
The word jackwagon certainly applies.
The only time I saw my husband cry was when our son was called away from us at the entry ceremony at West Point his plebe year.
The army gave no warning, just told the new cadets to get us, and leave their parents. I was stunned at the abrupt orders, but my very solid husband knew what it meant, and started to cry.
I envy your husband his tears.
This isn’t as ridiculous as it sounds. The crying part is just the external expression of emotional release, the lack of which can create the stress equivalent of PTSD and seriously mess you up, physically, emotionally and psychologically. The inability to express bottled-up emotions is a contributing factor to some types of heart disease.
It is a major red flag if say, you show some guy the last 10 minutes of Old Yeller, and he remains stoic. Unless he is a psychopath, that would probably be diagnostic, and he needs a medical workup.
I laughed til I cried.
I’m more apt to cry over a happy moment.
Like when Obama carries his ass.
While a man crying in itself isn’t a bad thing. I know I’ve done it, it just seems weird to force yourself into crying. I didn’t like crying when I did it, but I can assure you all it was for some dang good reasons.
I met R. Lee Ermey three years ago in San Jose, California. He is exactly like the character he plays (in the Geiko commercial, and even more so, in the movie, "Full Metal Jacket").
Anyway, we're at this event where kids are getting face painted and one of them walks up to R. Lee and asks for an autograph. He obliges but asks, "What's that crap on your face? Oh, wait, I can't say that, this is a family affair. So kid, what's that $hit on your face?" True story. He was not invited back.
From the meadhalls of ancient times to the crying circles of modern times. My my we have definitely de-evolved.
