Fitness legend Jack LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in California. He was 96.

LaLane hosted a popular workout show for several decades, opened a chain of gyms, and created a popular line of juicers.

His agent said he worked out and exercised every day of his life, even up until the end.

Not really, even into his later years, he lived a full and productive and active life. That pneumonia should fell him is really sad. He really did put fitness up front..served him well. People here in SLO will miss him.

He enjoyed his life, he prospered, and he helped people.
Not too shabby.

Jack LaLaine was a true American icon for decades. To pass quickly in his late 90’s is a testament to everything he worked for. God bless him.

This just goes to show you that if you eat right and exercise, you still die.

Still, he lasted longer than most. RIP, Jack.

I remember an old "Burke's Law" episode when Gene Barry replied to the fitness guy, "But I'll have more fun."

I sure hope he didn’t get pneumonia as a result of aspirating juice. A good man who inspired many; I’d put him up there with Charles Atlas.

He didn't just spend his life keeping in shape. He spent his life inspiring others in a positive way. And you can die an old coot after a decade or two of being unable to get around, spending half your time sick or recovering from something and the other half complaining about your ailments and doctors' visits ...

OR ...

... you can do what Jack LaLanne did and take as good care of your body as you would a nice sports car or nice house, maintaining it as best you can so that when you die an old coot, you lived well and could get around and have fun right up to the end.

LaLanne was a great man. He didn't waste a thing.

He was 96.

Just think how long he might have lived if he hadn't worn out his body and heart with all those workouts.........

Yes, in a way, it seems such a waste to spend your life keeping in shape knowing that your will die regardless.

Nah, being in shape is good. Someone already brought up George Burns which is a good example. Compare the way Burns walked in his 90's to the way Lalane strode. LaLane had a lot more good years than Burns, and I'd be willing to be was sexually active much longer. Which granted, is more important to some than others, but it keeps me exercising.

I'm going to die regardless, like you said, but hopefully my last ten years will be more enjoyable than the typical 100lbs overweight fat-ass who can't get to the kitchen without breathing hard.

Yes, I guess it all boils down to feeling good about the life you’ve led - whether it is inspiring to others to heathery lives or ... Oh well the bottom line is either you can worry about your legacy or simply go about dying with respect from those that actually care... It just really does not matter in the end...except to those outliving the other person ... Life is a bitch and we all are going to die - that is life!

My point was really more about feeling good about the life you're leading. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the morbidly obese can feel very good about the life they're leading. How can you enjoy life when you huff and puff and break out in a sweat just walking from your car to the supermarket doors to get more twinkies? IMHO, the joy you get out of life has a lot to do with the shape you're in. Not politically correct to say, but I'm saying it anyway.

Well, actually, life is so much more about beliefs and trying to inspire others that it seems so insignificant to the body... So many more have contributed so much more with ideas that it seems silly to worry about physical attributes or problems....look at physics, a cripple had much more influence on society than anyone with a great physique and a grand message... It is the mind that really counts...
