Gus Zernial, the former major league slugger who settled in Clovis after his 11-year career ended and became a sports broadcaster and one of the Fresno Grizzlies' biggest advocates, died Thursday after a long illness.
He was 87.

To most Freepers this won’t mean anything, but to those of us who grew up in the Fresno area it does. Thanks for posting.
This non Fresnite remembers him well, and, in fact, recalls having his baseball card as a kid.
I’m not from the Fresno area but I was lucky enough to be brought up in the 1950’s from which I remember Gus well, I too had some of his baseball cards and may still have some, will have to check. To me the era of the 50’s was the golden age of baseball. Now I don’t even watch any more!
every stinkin pack of baseball cards I bought in the 50’s included a gus zernial card. no good for trading...only good for spokes in the bike.
RIP Gus...you done good.
