If it went supernova THIS YEAR earth would not see it until 640 years later (AD 2650).
If we actually see it that means it WENT supernova 640 years ago.
That’s what 640 light years means in terms of observation.

Or it could have happened 500 years ago, in which case we will all be dead before it becomes visible here 110 years from now.

Someone has been predicting this on and off for hundreds of years. It hasn’t happened yet, and chances are it won’t happen in any of our, our children’s or their children’s lifetimes.
However, it might have exploded 15 minutes ago and we won’t know it until the first flash gets here.
640 light years at six trillion miles to the light year....it might take a while.....
