Did the ancient Egyptians know of pygmy mammoths? Well, there is that tomb painting.

I wonder if the mastodon was what they were talking about? The mastodon was a forest creature, and (in its known period of existence) was found mostly east of the Mississippi; the mammoth was found mostly west. Anyway, thanks, it’s another uncertainty which has an outside chance of someday being verified by a find of recent remains.

Could easily be. I’ve heard a couple of versions of the story involving David Ingram, basically if an English pirate ship got sunk around Florida in those days and by some miracle you (the pirate) survived and swam ashore, you had to hike back to New England on your own and then hitch a ride back to England. Anybody who survived all that would have stories to tell.

That's interesting. I don't know how much of the information at this link is fact vs. speculation but there's definitely evidence of pygmy mammoths in the U.S. -- but apparently at a much earlier date.

Mammoths and creatures normally viewed as ice-age megafauna are just one part of it. You have accurate depictions of known dinosaur types in Amerind petroglyphs and artwork.

Sardinia is notorious for dwarf species. Something in the water? soil? that delicious broom? the withering malediction of the Sard? Who knows...

aaiiieee! Living room size mammoths.!!!
If they can be cloned, they will be cloned and we’ll all be invited over to our fashion conscious friends’ homes to see their new pet.
Don’t mind the tusks and be sure to step over the dung on the rug.

Unless it's discovered to be a healing, organic foot poultice.

Some other carnivorous dinosaur must have bitten off its spiked tail?
That part's out of frame.

Imagine the controlled killing in a designated hunting preserve. And the size of the rugs.
