Lee blew it at Gettysburg, had he taken the high ground upon arriving the war might have gone the other way...and maybe state's right would be taken more seriously. (Damn Joshua Chamberlain and the 20th Maine)

I'm not sure about that. There was a symbiosis between Sherman and Grant that made each man a better warrior. It's a fascinating dynamic and one that is explored thoroughly in Charles B. Flood's Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War
