ARkStorm: California's other 'Big One'
ScienceDaily ^ | Jan. 17, 2011 | Science Daily

For emergency planning purposes, scientists unveiled a hypothetical California scenario that describes a storm that could produce up to 10 feet of rain, cause extensive flooding (in many cases overwhelming the state's flood-protection system) and result in more than $300 billion in damage.

The "ARkStorm Scenario," prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey and released at the ARkStorm Summit in Sacramento on Jan. 13-14, combines prehistoric geologic flood history in California with modern flood mapping and climate-change projections to produce a hypothetical, but plausible, scenario aimed at preparing the emergency response community for this type of hazard.

The USGS, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Emergency Management Agency convened the two-day summit to engage stakeholders from across California to take action as a result of the scenario's findings, which were developed over the last two years by more than 100 scientists and experts.

If it happens, it will be, of course, because of that danged global warming.

Is this a “were all gonna die” kind of news story? If so, see my tag line!

Nah, just California.

Of little concern to someone living practically on top of the Yellowstone Supervolcano.

Scientists need more funding to study this possibility. That’s what this is all about. More funding. Follow the money.

Take action, eh? That sounds like it's going to hurt.

Regardless of the cause of these biblical-like floods, it makes sense to plan ahead for rescue and/or recovery of victims.

Most of us need more funding.

Problem with me is it just isn’t in me to lie, cheat and steal to get it.

I agree with the planning ahead. But on a more personal level.

If they tell me an ARkstrom is coming, RUN AWAY!

It’s ok, car type person. Wasn’t that bad here. My plan , when they announce Yellowstone is going to blow, is to drive straight for it. It’s a short drive.

BTW, maybe you would know. Who are the stakeholders they are referring to who have enough spare cash just laying around to throw at this?

I was hoping Hollywood. With any luck, that pile of trash would be swept far, far out to sea.

*DING!* *DING!* *DING!*

We have a winner!

The CO2 / AGW scam is getting stale, some can see the handwriting on the wall, so they are running the next scam.

Bring back the old Civil Defense local organization/ coordination for disasters system, and it’ll cover for this, earthquakes, etc. Pay for what little it costs by killing FEMA, which has been a miserable Central Planning failure.

I’m all for killing FEMA, but if the endless bureaucracies are running the show, the cost will be cataclysmic.

Might be better off letting the storm wash California down to bedrock and turning it over to the Mexicans. We stole it from them anyways...

teehee (I’ll read your page later)

I especially like the part about them being indigenous.

All I see are a bunch of ignorant, indignant, half-breed leftover wannabees from the RAPE of the Americas by Spain.
