In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
plinth \PLINTH\ noun
1. the lowest part of the base of an architectural column
2. a block used as a base (as for a statue)
Example sentence:
The museum workers reverently set the newly restored statue back onto an imposing plinth.
Extra example: "Anthony put on his glasses and bent down, searching for a minute label taped to the marble plinth on which the Atlas figures stood." -- From Rose Tremain's 2010 novel Trespass
Did you know?
"These ivy-clad arcades -- / These mouldering plinths ... are they all -- / All of the famed, and the colossal left
?" In these lines from "The Coliseum," Edgar Allan Poe alludes to a practical feature of classical architecture. The plinth serves the important purpose of raising the base of the column it supports above the ground, thus protecting it from dampness and mold. The humble plinth is usually a mere thick block. Its humbly named, too, for the Greek word "plinthos" means simply "tile" or "brick." English writers have used "plinth," a shortened version of the Latin form "plinthus," since the beginning of the 17th century. The meaning was extended to bases for statues, vases, or busts in the 18th century.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Here is my example with today's WFTD:
When even the plinth upon which a decent civic education should stand has been reduced to a pile of rubble, how long before both Liberty and Justice are toppled entirely. Both left and right oriented opinionists have a tendancy to invoke the First Amendment and accusations of "censorship" against private sector publishers, broadcasters, and other service providers while completely ignoring literal acts of Congress (the only party actually enjoined by the First Amendment from restrictive acts toward others) that have the specific purpose of restricting freedom of speech.

Get to class you slackers! I've opened a new classroom, but Dave forgot to get the gradebook from xsmommy. So if you're looking for a grade you'll have to ping her. Secret Garden and Tioga are usually pretty generous with the plusses if you compliment their shapely legs, so you might try submitting your homework to them instead. My secret for getting extra plusses on my A+ from xs will remain a secret between me and her, so you're on your own if you want her to review your work.
Erect a plinth upon which Sarah Palin can stand. Just watched her video response to the shooting, and just damn, but that was good. I have been traditionally somewhat lukewarm to Palin, but holy schmoly that was good.
Another long past due dirtnap. Maybe he and jimmuh could go on a trip together and never return.

In this sad socialist labyrinth
Now there are some around here who would either scold you or make jokes about using "erect" in the same sendtence with Sarah Palin. (Obviously I'm not one of those people.)
just shaking my head.....
I’m tardy, but here. Can I have more time?
that’s interesting, i will have to watch it later one when i get home. i am lukewarm myself.
PS, pliny died in the eruption of mt vesuvius.
Do we have to ping her and knock her of her plinth?
I agree on all counts. I am wishy washy about her, but that was an excellent response. Right on target. Oops.... poorly chosen words. Oh well.
I did not know that. Or if I did, that was information lost to me. Thank you for restoring it to my organic hard drive. :)
Leonard Plinth Garnell.
I wonder if the Chihuly sculptures that Hillary and Tipper stole at the end of their husbands’ terms of office were displayed on plinths?
I thought that when you had more than 1 plethora you had a plinth. Musta been my Midwest education ...
That is beautiful! I just can’t hear the word, Chihuly, without thinking of the clintons... lol
