Bulldozer to come close to Core i7 ( sources say....)

We have some good news for everyone who would like to see AMD make a big comeback in style.

Since the time when Athlon used to be a high-end brand, and by that we mean the good old K8 core, it's been a while since AMD had a high end part capable of competing with Intel on a par.

However, initial test scores that slipped to a hands of industry source are suggesting that Bulldozer should come really close to new Core i7 six-core CPUs. Bulldozer has both six and eight cores in the pipeline and they should be launching before the end of Q2 2011, at least that is the current schedule.

The performance of Bulldozer should come really close to Core i7, but we don't know if this might be enough to take Intel's high end market dominance. Samples of Bulldozer are out for a while now and the full production should start as soon as this quarter.

Sources are suggesting that and yields should be quite good and that the chip is doing just fine in 32nm. One thing is certain, even if Core i7 remains faster, Bulldozer X8 and X6 parts should end up way cheaper. It looks like AMD will finally give Intel a run for its money.

So it is very curious as to why the AMD Board thought they needed a new CEO.

From Marketwatch:

AMD Chief Executive Meyer resigns

All I can tell you is that anyone who agrees to locate a major chip plant in upstate NY is a pretty crappy long-term planner. No matter what they offer in short-term incentives to move to NY and no matter how many supposedly wonderful Nanotech experts will come out of UAlbany, the company will suffer mightily in the end.

Just in time. My old K8 box is about on its last legs and I’ve already started pricing out options for its successor.

How old is a K8..?

You must be happy with very little performance....

the neutered quad Black 555 and DDR3 memory is a pretty good performer...and cheap;...

Runs as an X2 processor...that’s a dual processor but has a 6m L3 which is nice for serious browsing.

Found this....

*****************EXCERPT********************

AMD K8 family is the eighth and the latest(??)(Not sure that is now true ) generation of AMD microprocessors. The first members of this family, server-class Opteron processors, were introduced on April 22, 2003

From:

AMD K8

And the early ones ran Hot!

The new stuff runs rather cool.

Asus SK8V mobo. Still benchmarking 4.3 on the Windows 7 Experience meter. Memory at 5.6 and Graphic and HD tied at 6.5. It does what I want it too. I don’t have nearly as much time to game as I used to, so it’s mostly family photos, internet, job related, blah-blah-blah...

I know. I worked there for almost five years. Part of the CPG design verification team. When I left we were just finishing the merger with ATI.

I'm still kicking myself for leaving. Not that were I'm working isn't an excellent company, but I still wish I'd never left Texas.

Yes, but that was just a prototype of the *new* Bulldozer that’s ready for market.

Just imagine it’s possibilities now! Why, consider how many pancakes it could make in one cycle!

:-P
