Todd, Dad and friends are it for now - as far as we know. How about an all volunteer ex-military FReeper Palin Posse to surround the Palins 24/7? Take volunteers, check their clearances, interview them, etc.

Not sure if thatd fly. Although Sarah is in the public eye shes no longer an elected official. Itd be like offering SS protection to Rush Limbaugh. You're probably right that Secret Service protection probably wouldn't fly, but he's the president. He's got the ability to pull some pretty hefty strings if he wants to.
At the very least, he could make a public statement to the press that people need to stop jumping to conclusions about where the shooter got his motivation to commit his heinous act. He's got the power to rein in the craziness on the left if he wants to.
I haven't heard him do so, have you?

If anything, Sarah should request Secret Service Protection and likely requires a SS Detail equivalent to that which is provided to the president.
To: Windflier
Well she would have to say she is running first.

He did do a minute of silence thing. Like what he did when he was a senator.

Since she is not officially running for anything yet, why would she be offered secret service protection? So maybe it's not Secret Service protection. A president has the ability to make mountains move, if he wants to. He could unofficially push some sort of protection her way, if he was so inclined.
The fact is, Sarah Palin is as much a political figure as any elected official in the country, and as such, she is in every bit as much danger as any of them are. In her case, even more-so.
A real president would reach out to her and her family through unofficial channels, if need be, and offer to do something to keep them safe from harm.

The only Secret Service agents hed offer to the Palins would be made. One of the Palins could end up missing or dead. I wouldnt trust anything coming from 0bama. And Sarah might not, either. That said, Obama ought to at least offer to help in this very tense (and dangerous) moment.

"The mission of the United States Secret Service is to safeguard the nation's financial infrastructure and payment systems to preserve the integrity of the economy, and to protect national leaders..." I could be convincingly argued that Sarah Palin is indeed a "national leader", and as such, qualifies for Secret Service protection.
Of course, she has little need to even consider such a thing. Sarah can have the best crack team of ex-military professionals at her doorstep at the drop of a hat. All she's got to do is ask.

Take volunteers, check their clearances, interview them, etc. Absolutely. I think that Sarah knows she can have the best security force on earth anytime she gives the word.
Who knows? Perhaps she already does.

If anything, Sarah should request Secret Service Protection and likely requires a SS Detail equivalent to that which is provided to the president. As indylindy said in post #26, she'd have to declare her candidacy for 2012 to get that protection. I know that a lot of folks have theorized that she might choose this moment to do that.

I can't help but think Bush would have helped arrange something already. I can't help but agree with you. I think that GWB would have moved those mountains on day one of this tragedy, no matter what it took.

Of course you are kidding, right? Why would he protect what will probably be the main reason he is thrown out of the White House in 2012? Because, in the game of three dimensional chess that we call politics, he's going to lose points for not at least reaching out to the Palins in this time of heightened danger to them.

However, I wouldn’t count on Obama to do the right thing. Nothing he does has anyone other than his ownself in mind.

Protection? Why she should have been arrested by now! /s
To: Windflier
If we dilute ‘national leader’, we could also add George Clooney, George Soros and Oprah to that list.
I do not believe the Secret Service is, or should ever become a ‘gift’ that a sitting President can bestow upon private citizens.

I don’t think you can get Secret Service protection unless you are a Presidential candidate. She probably has private security. If not she should get some. Paging Gavin DeBecker.

Soetoro is more like to deploy snipers. Against the Palins.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
