House freshman throws party – and GOP cringes

With Republican leaders anxious to set an austere tone for their ascendance into the House majority this week, the lavish fundraiser scheduled for Tuesday night at a trendy Washington hotel to benefit a dozen GOP freshmen is not exactly the populist image leaders are anxious to project.

House Speaker-elect John Boehner, whose name was featured on the invitation, is nonetheless skipping the event at the W Hotel, where lobbyists, political action committee managers and others paying the $2,500 ticket price will be treated to a performance by country music star LeAnn Rimes (a $50,000 package includes a block of eight tickets and a “VIP suite” at the W). The office of incoming Majority Leader Eric Cantor, another featured invitee, was noncommittal Monday night when asked whether he’d attend.

“If incoming GOP freshmen were hoping to bring fiscal responsibility and ‘family values’ to Washington, they may have gotten off to an interesting start,” conservative blogger Matt Lewis noted, citing the event’s steep ticket prices, as well as Rimes’s confessed extramarital affair and her recent appearance in a “Sexy Santa” outfit at a gay men’s chorus Christmas performance.

Okay... is there anyone here who still has high hopes for this incoming Congress? The election was just the FIRST step. If we aren't on these guys like white on rice EVERY SINGLE DAY, all of these guys are going to be sucked up into the D.C. corrupt lobbying culture.

Some of us might say it's already happened before the first day of the session...

Don’t also doubt though that NYT, AP, WaPo, etc.... are going to announce every foible and every misstatement, and spin every legislative effort to put the GOP in the worst light possible.

Maybe Ms. Rimes can rebook the event at one of the Wednesday evening White House blowouts.

I didn’t see where this was a party paid for by the taxpayers of this country, like the going out party that Pelousie had.

Not really. If these guys goof up it could cost the GOP the next election though.

May I be the first to point out that this thread is useless without a LeeAnn Rimes “sexy santa” outfit pic?

I am already guessing there will be a big WashPost article about this being a big boon for the hookers.

... the NRCC confirmed that its chairman, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), intends to be there.

Among the Republicans who are members of America's New Majority and stand to benefit from the Rimes event are Scott Desjarlais of Tennessee, Steve Southerland of Florida and Renee Ellmers of North Carolina — all of whom had tea party support and signed the Contract From America — a set of tea party principles that pledges fealty to the Constitution and limited government.

I think the freshmen are wise to start fundraising immediately. The Dems are going to hit many of these districts hard in 2012.

Raising money is a necessary part of the game.

I’m with you! To be a politician in this day and age, you must continually raise funds. This proposed party will not cost the taxpayers a dime.

The other side of the coin is that political types like to be seen, and people with big bucks like to be seen with politicians......

Now a fundraiser is news worthy?

We'll have to wait and see if the new Congress is a change from the last one. One thing that won't be a change is the agenda driven media.

Although the answer is obvious, where is Politico's outrage over all the Obama fundraisers?

Weelll Americans...

From out here I can see the communists have already begun their attack.

A simple fund-raising is to be turned into a MAJOR CORRUPT MOVE FROM THE GOP?

For heavens sake people! Send Political-Correctness to HELL and uphold your CONGRESSMEN!

SUPPORT THEM!

The war is on. Yes, the leftist mobsters are going to try and castrate the newcomers (as well as the old timer) GOPers. We’re on and we’re in! The battle for America has started and there can be but one victor and that would be WE THE PEOPLE. We have everything to lose so losing is not an option. Phones, e-mails, letters, demonstrations are our friends. No rolling over. It’s on - let’s roll!!! God bless America!

Balderdash. Fundraisers always are lavish.

Politico is serving as a Concern Troll.

I read the entire {pubbies-bad, bad, bad} article and yep it's a giant fund raiser and may succeed and make money.

If it does, I'm all for it and piss on the press.

The people at FR that are getting righteous and venting same o, same o, need to get a grip and realize that politics requires large amounts of money.

It is a fact and if we want our guys re-elected, then they have to raise multiple millions, and they cannot get it all from a website.

Agreed. Don’t buy this Politico/MSM BS. It is designed to make you give up the fight before it even starts. They want conservative activists to believe that there is no use even trying because as soon as the GOP gets in charge, they are going to do nothing. Thus, we might as well accept the Dems and their big spending. Conservative news sources play into this too—if the GOP doesn’t get 100% of the conservative position, they throw up their hands and say nothing can be done, or gun for the Republican officeholders to be taken down in the next election. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t hold GOP politicians accountable—we had too much “support the home team no matter what they do” during the Bush years and we got a spending and entitlement disaster that paved the way for Obama’s Socialism. But don’t be too quick to pull the trigger.
