LONDON (AP) -- He could have stayed in teaching. That's what his parents wanted: it was the safe, secure route for a young man with working-class roots and a face few would describe as handsome.
Postlethwaite had little going for him when he started in an industry where good looks - think Robert Redford or George Clooney - are valued. He had few connections, a name that was hard to pronounce, and could distinguish himself only by his talent.

RIP Peter. An excellent actor. With Anne Francis this makes two today.
Don’t forget Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill in the Richard Sharpe TV series.
He played the corrupted Sgt. Hakeswill in the “Sharpe’s Wars” series. One hell of an actor.
Steven Spielberg once called him “The best actor in the world”.
He was in James and the Giant Peach as well. Which we watched along with two other movies he appeared in just last week.
Umm... There’s a Solomon Kane movie?? I’ve been waiting for a Solomon Kane movie for years. Even wrote a treatment for one myself.
He was indeed.
He also was just in “The Town”.
I would highly recommend. Best movie I have seen in awhile.
Mister Postlelwaite has always been one of those great character actors who stayed in the background and helped good actors be better.
Loved his as Sharpe’s nemesis and as Kobayashi and as the ‘Go To Guy’, Danny in ‘Brassed Off’.
The world will be less colorful with his passing.
Jack.
He was terrific in “In The Name Of The Father”. That movie was a heck of a good movie. Corin Redgrave died last year too.
re: Solomon Kane
The SK movie has been in the can for a couple of years now. There are even some trailers available for viewing online. I’m not sure what the hold up is on releasing it.
Always liked “Brassed Off”.
I’m still hating the guy from his role in The Town.
Is that a good movie? I’m thinking about renting it.
Meh, not bad. Novel concept.
Be prepared to hit rewind a bunch of times.
