Chickens are nasty vile birds, but they taste good!

Old varieties aren't. Look up Dominiques and Javas. They're known as "heritage" birds.

Old varieties, new varieties... Mean vile nasty critters. And they bite. Or peck. And they really like the taste of the kids who come to feed them, collect the eggs and clean their nasty poop up.

Ducks are much nicer.

I trained the ducks to line up for feeding and they would wait in the pen while I collected the eggs and cleaned up the joint. Then when I tapped three times on the door they would file in.

I always felt a little sad eating duck. Chickens not so much.

I like chickens. We had 3 for pets until the raccoons moved in and we knew it was a mere matter of time, so we gave them to a friend who often keeps chickens. She’s down to one now (too many foxes over there) and it follows her around whenever she’s outside. DH used to play with our chickens a lot, they were very friendly. They were auracanas (sp?).
