It’s the “emptied jelly jar” that just sounds so stupid, as though to say “jelly jar” would make people wonder how they put whiskey in it if it was full of jelly so Ayers had to be overly specific and write “emptied” because if he said “empty jelly jar” someone would say that it couldn’t be empty if it had whiskey in it. He could have said “the two drank whiskey from a jelly jar.” Even then we have to wonder what the point was. Was it the whiskey? Was it the container? Was it the sharing? Was he trying to hint at moonshine whiskey in a mason jar? Were both the “emptied jelly jar” and “whiskey” metaphores?
