Here's the deal. I've never been much for any type of whiskey. I have some single malt that's almost gone and I really didn't care that it was (it's taken me years to go through one bottle)...but. I've suddenly found Rusty Nails:
2 parts scotch 1 part Drambuie twist of lemon
Sweet but not cloying like straight Drambuie. Just a really nice sipping cocktail ("sipping"...what a concept). But while I have plenty of Drambuie in the house I'm about out of scotch. So I need a recommendation of a decent scotch for mixing. I don't want swill but I'm not wishing to go broke either.
Help?
I was in the Air Force stationed in Drambuie, off the
Barbary coast. I used to hang out at the Magumba bar.
It was a rough place, the seediest dive on the wharf.
Populated with every reject and cut-throat from Bombay
to Calcutta. Its worse than Detroit....
I know one of you does bourbon and maybe the other does scotch or maybe I’m not remembering right at all.
Forget the Scotch, the whiskey or the gin and vodka’s. Stay with the vine, a good port or a brandy is the only way to go.
Single Malt: Laphroaig.
There is no other.
I second the Grouse.
Also, if you have access to Trader Joe’s, they have a pretty decent house brand single-malt. I think it’s around $11.
>The Famous Grouse - $32 for a 1.75 litre bottle.
to put in in context with my price list:
Famous Grouse $25
>The prices you quote are undoubtedly for a 750ml bottle.
Yes, I mentioned that.
Heck of place to scrimp. Skip the drambui and use just a splash of good bottled water and a 12+ single malt. Ice cubes are optional.
Hmmm I’m goin to the store.
Damn straight
Johnny Walker Red. For really cheap, I like Scoresby.
But don't get sucked into the pretentious scotch bullshit. After the first sip your tongue can't tell Glenlivet from Cutty Sark. Just go with Johnnie Walker Red and enjoy.
I think I’ve seen that movie a hundred times...it’s got some classic lines...
Cutty is like water
A vote for Dewars here.
OT, vodka drinkers should try Tito’s...very good.
Give me Hamm on five, hold the Mayo...
Sorry to be a snob, but no cocktails made with Scotch pass my lips. It contains all the flavor I desire all by itself.
I don’t drink it all that often and so I go for the good stuff, at least the caliber of a Macallan 15 or preferably 18. I take it neat or with a bit of mineral water, but I will confess to occasionally using a few cubes of ice on a very hot day here in Arizona.
Clan MacGregor/Pretty Cheap for a Half Gallon and not bad scotch either.
Clan MacGregor Blended.
