Put me in charge ... Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho 's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.
Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.
Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place. In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the "common good."
Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem. If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

Alfred W. Evans for President!
(Or at least Governor of Texas.) :-)
Communist rant.
He is much nicer than I am.
See tagline.
This won’t work. It’s based on common sense.
;-D
RACISM!/s
Alfed, you da MAN!!! Nothing more need be said. If you want our money, our rules!
Beat me to it.
Here in Rockingham County, NC we’ve had lots of people who have been turned down/denied funds/told there were not monies available. Our church handled one resident who called for some help with her power bill. One of our deacons went over to the residence and found the same situation: big screen tv blasting away in the middle of the afternoon, everyone on different cell phones, ipods, gadgets, etc.
Hard to remain compassionate when you see how people use their funds on wants and wait for the needs to be met by others.
Sounds reasonable .......
I live in Raleigh, and grew up in Charlotte. Nice to meet you, FRiend.
Yes, I try to be as compassionate as I can, but I don’t know if it’s a test of my faith, or a slap in the face when you try to help people and find them in situations that they (themselves) perpetuate.
I don’t understand the feeling of entitlement that some apparently have.
I stopped giving money to panhandlers years ago when I realized that all I was doing was allowing them to keep asking me.
PRISONERS IN PENITENTIARIES AND JAILS.
You see, it just is not practical or even possible to prevent the drugs and paraphernalia from getting into these SECURE(?) facilities.
Not a conservative solution:
“just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away.”
Why unlimited amounts of these staples? Price? Nutritional value? Becoming food police is leftist. Conservatives need to solve the problem, not perpetuate it.
“The first thing I’d do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations.”
Abortifacient drugs and birth control are not conservative. Neither is coercion to use them.
“If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.”
Reproduction is normative in marriage, not otherwise. Job and economic status are no basis for government intrusion into the marriage bed. Society does have an interest in encouraging and preserving the traditional family model. This does not include sterilization, forced abortion, or intrusion into areas that should be private. Is this how we solved the challenges of the great depression? No. A lot of babies were born to parents needing public assistance.
And who exactly is going to check for these tattoos? The TSA? No, there is no risk of abuse and exploitation there. /s
Just remember, all of these solutions the author wants to be in charge of, will be implemented by government workers who may fail to carry out their duties properly or even use their positions for exploitation. Have you ever heard about the U.N. workers who distribute food to the poor, and how they have exploited the desperation of starving people to use the women and children for sex?
“Your ‘home’ will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried.”
The author thinks the bureaucratic and cost problems of public housing will be resolved by an army of government inspectors? Unworkable.
“Before you write that I’ve violated someone’s rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.”
The author has accepted the leftists goal: now that people are dependent on government assistance to survive, any kind of draconian rules are now acceptable.
I’m sure the author means well, but so do most leftists. Ball this proposal up, throw it in the garbage and try again.
Happy New Year, RangerM. Yeah, I used to assist panhandlers (when I was living in the NYC area)—give them a dollar and a gospel tract. I would tell them I couldn’t give them the one (knowing what they would likely do with it), without giving them the other (sensing that was the real need anyway).
Entitlement is all around us now—almost part of the human DNA it seems. Your evaluation of the process (you realized you were merely ensuring a future handout request) seems to be at the heart of the problem. Our nation has (un)wittingly inculcated many with the idea that if you wait long enough, if you scream loud enough, if you chide often enough, you will receive (sort of a twist on “Ask, and you shall receive...”)
no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho HoWhat's he got against prostitution?

Here’s a link to all retail outlets in the country that accept food stamps and the food stamp money funneled through each store.
One of the myriad of problems with food stamps is that they do go through retail channels instead of through government or pantry situations.
Retailers mark-up, profit on their sales of food. Stores profit margins per item can go from a low of @ 30% to as high as 70% (depending on the product and department)
So the food stamp cost is not putting the full value of food to the recipients- it’s steering money into retailers as profit - taxpayer funded profit margins.
Have you ever been accused of picking fly feces out of pepper...??? I bet you would be good at it....
What’s that big black rectangular thing on the stand in the background?
