And other than Mark Steyn they are uniformly terrible.
Mark Levin
Mark Belling
Mark Simone
Mark Davis
...all good, smart, talented

I agree, I like all Rush’s guest hosts, they’re great actually. Especially Steyn and I like Davis quite a bit too. But yeah, you don’t get to sit behind the goldwn EIB mike without mad skills.
In some houses they are called idiots and stupid...:O)
But what about the ones called “Bob”?
Mark Michaels
Mike Markham
Know both.neither ars in radio although they both have faces for it.
I like Steyn’s sense of humor and his obvious intelligence, but his stammering, and his repeating nearly every short phrase that he speaks starts to grate on my one nerve pretty early in the broadcast. The sad thing is, I think it might just be an affectation and that he could stop doing it if he tried. He’s a bright guy. I can’t understand why he does it. To me, it really degrades the sharpness of what he has to say, and pretty much destroys my enjoyment of listening to him. FWIW.
Herman Cain Bump!

Agreed.

On second thought....
The worst was the one in for Beck. He spent 3 hours and said nothing. He talked a mile a minute and said nothing. I listen to em at work.
Ray was instrumental in getting the three strikes law going, and Chris has one of the most biting senses of humor I've ever heard on the airwaves. All available at kmjnow.com, and no, I'm not a blog pimp. I just like this station.
That is certainly true to an extent. It is always a shock to see a talk show host in person, they are nothing like how you pictured them and their voices aren't the same either as studio microphones tend to give you a much richer, deep voice. And yes, they are more entertaining than enlightening and they will often take a position that will get the most people riled up. The wouldn't have much of a career in the radio business if they weren't that way.
Lots of left handed presidents as well.
Thanx!
“I gave up on talk radio, once you know people in the radio biz its like seeing the wizard behind the curtain. Its 100% phoney. You figure out your audience, say what they want to hear, form a fake bond I am just like you and get your listeners angry.”
Oh, thank you. I thought I was listening to a free and open exchange of ideas and opinions. I’m so glad to know it’s really the producers who run the shows. Do you have any discernment, or have you become so cynical you choose to not even bother?
There are good and bad shows out there. There are hosts who rely more on provocation than substance. They are all guilty of it, to a degree. But when I listen, my mind is stimulated and my passions are aroused. I’m sad to see you consider this a negative.
Well played.
Mike and Mike in the Morning (ESPN) are not terrible.
Mark Levin is not terrible.
But a fun thread anyway.
I Sean have but was in no Rush to say it.

I’m not sure who Sto knows, but if he thinks the hosts or the industry is “100% phony”, it tells me his anecdote is from tissue paper thin experience. I’ve worked with one of the “Mike’s” already mentioned in the thread. Like many, they are trained, expert debaters; they can - YES - argue either point of view based and depending on the ‘facts’ at hand. However, the point of view will be ultimately be theirs as it’s developed and displayed from integrity. This comes from genuine passion, intellect, authenticity, personal values, and (usually/hopefully) solid research. The distinction that I had to make, after first meeting “Mike”, is that he’s not going to carry that same high energy of intellect and spirited debate outside the studio; and the last thing he’s likely going to want to do is discuss politics or current events unless it’s for show prep. If anything, the curtains are drawn back around the Wizard after the red panel mic feed light goes off. I can only presume the best hosts must all work the insane hours that “Mike” does and with full attention to show prep, listener emails, website content and accuracy, sponsorship meetings, audio spot reads, and now - twitter/facebook interactions for the sake of listener numbers and promotions. This is over and above the three hours on air per day, handling curveballs, tech issues, time constraints of hard/soft breaks, irresponsible guests who are late and/or don’t show, egomaniacle-control freak publicists, revolving engineers/producers with different styles, worries about marketing staff target numbers and general staff incompetence, making sure the sponsors’ needs are met while also balancing listener wants... They make great money but certainly earn it where their heart/soul are thrown in to the job. (Hell, I haven’t even mentioned the part about dealing with fanatical stalkers/psychos).
I’m not sure what Sto is talking about, but I don’t see where there is time enough to be “100% phony” and how that’s pulled off with any degree of success.
