I can remember the first time I saw the Snake Pit, Hush Hush Sweet Charolette and Light in the Piazza. I was stunned at first, then I was riveted to her performance. The attention to mental illness that she brought by the Snake Pit benefited everyone. And I loved the struggle that took place in the Light in the Piazza. Parental love and worry versus giving her daughter a happy life. I wondered how many families watched that movie and got a different perspective about their grown mentally challenged kids.

So, thank you Ms. de Havilland. I have enjoyed your movies for years. I think they broke the mold with you. May you continue to have a blessed life.
94 and she STILL doesn’t talk to her sister Joan Fontaine!
I heard about that years ago. Do you know what it was all about?
I believe that the interview mentioned in this article touched briefly on it. Joan had plenty to say, Olivia not so much. It seemed like Joan may have gotten jealous when Olivia started having success at acting.
I checked and at the bottom of the article the feed to the interview works. By the way, the interview was quite refreshing and you could tell the interviewer got a kick out of Olivia. Those pictures amaze me. She does not look 94!
Not too many of Errol Flynn’s leading ladies left...

Apparently, just plain ole sibling rivalry - Olivia’s mother preferred her over Joan. I met Joan about ten years ago - very gracious like a lot of the old studio stars.
I was too young to see that America, but heard it was beautiful. The suits, the dresses, the lack of profanity, ...a bygone era.

Parents can ruin the relationship between their children or foster it. It is a shame that Olivia doesn’t love her sister when they have so much in common to share. It would make both lives even richer (if that is possible) and that “hate” that was created by the parents, would not be taking space in her heart. She needs tol end it.
Parents back then did not understand psychology very well and the profound effects it could have on relationships, particularly among family. To blame her sister is not to get to the real reason for the anger and hurts her in more ways especially with God, than it does anyone else.
Olivia was especially gifted by God in many ways. So was her sister. It is a shame.
She’s still lovely.
Totally agree with you. My mother had a terrible relationship with her sister. I do think there is a certain amount of bullying that goes on with older siblings towards younger ones. If the parents don’t nip it in the bud it can ruin future relationships. But often parents are so busy and harrassed they don’t think about the future and the need for family love. So sad.
LOVE HER!!
Classy lady and great actress.
My favorite Olivia movie; The Heiress.
Thanks for the ping.
Very nice article...
