Pat Robertson says a lot of things that people dont like. At the beginning of the year, he blamed the devastating earthquake in Haiti on a supposed pact earlier Haitians had made with Satan (I discuss this here). Robertson is closing the year with something that absolutely shocked me when I heard about it. He has come out against the War on Drugs, or at least against mandatory minimum sentences for marijuana offenses.

He’s right.
It’s a relief to see the truth regarding this senseless prohibition, coming from one of our ‘religious leaders’.
Not surprising at all. Pat is far from the only social conservative who believes simple possession of pot shouldn't be punished with prison time.
I happen to agree with him on this.
While the Haitian-Satan thing sounds wacko, the Haitians did just lynch 40 people for spreading cholera, some for being witches... When they start building Mosques in Haiti, then we’ll know for sure.
Conservative or not, religious or not, we should take the issue of imprisonment of other human beings more seriously than we often do.
There’s a big difference between being “drunk with wine” and drinking a glass or two of wine. The key word being “drunk”. Pot has medicinal use - if only just for being a stress reliever. GOD gave us herbs and other substances which can be used in a helpful way - that alter the mind (caffeine, etc).
You are right, we should keep ourselves clear of mind. The whole thing is moderation.
Conservatives support privatization of government funtions and their is hardly a more lucrative example than the coporate run jail system. Of course we need to lock people up. It is good for business. /sarcasm./
The fact that pot is illegal is stupid! imho
Did God say "Toss them into prison if they drink!"?
“Conservative or not, religious or not, we should take the issue of imprisonment of other human beings more seriously than we often do. “
I couldn’t agree more. People of faith should be the ones offering grace and forgiveness, but they are usually the ones pushing for the harshest punishment.
It’s a serious thing to throw someone in jail and most people shrug it off like it’s nothing. But actions have unintended consequences, even actions with a clear and valid intent can wreak havoc.
Lots of people think that we can handle problems like drug addiction with just throwing people in jail and — poof! — problem solved. I’ve had enough family members who are addicts to know that jail time doesn’t solve that problem. People advocate such casual use of jail time and then wonder why there is no family structure left in the lower-income classes. Trying to solve the drug problem with jail time has created an even bigger problem, with out-of-wedlock births at an all time high, and with more and more young men in jail their children are sure to follow in their footsteps.
Really? Then why didn't God say that? He is all knowing and all seeing after all. Therefore He knew that people would eventually discover the psychoactive properties of some plants. So it logically follows that God, if he meant 'don't smoke plants that alter your mind' He would have said it. Right?
Unless of course you want to posit that God isn't all knowing and all seeing.
Can't have it both ways old boy.
We Baptists believe that Jesus turned the water into grape juice at the wedding in Cana.
What would anti-drug conservatives say if the first laws proposed for the entire planet were proscriptions of drug use?
And if you oppose laws that supersede US authority, how do you justify the existing federal situation?
Cool! So any new evil we can concoct is okay becasue it is not expressly prohibited in God’s word. Woo-hoo!
You can make the same argument about hookers being here and God’s knowledge of it.
When it gets right down to it, pot is a temptation as are other drugs and hookers to some people. Being tested is part of faith. You can choose wisely or not. It’s called free will.
