hasn’t the lame duck congress passed legislation permanently putting an end to profit? that’s where all the trouble starts, after all.

It’s miserable to be behind someone in line at the C-store who is buying a fistful of the things. Takes forever to scan them. Don’t know why it’s so much hassle.

It’s just one barcode selling another barcode. Maybe there’s a feedback loop, or something.

Scam? I'm assuming this was a visa gift card or some such thing? Convenience stores make one half of a percent on each sale of these. They also pay a monthly use fee on the machine used to activate the cards. So, in reality they carry them at a loss or without a profit to accommodate the customer who might just get a tank of gas or gallon of milk at the same time. I think its a shame that people don't take responsibility for their own purchasing choices and then cry “scam”! When they pay extra for convenience.

Is this a SCAM or what?

It's not a scam, but Amazon gift cards are a better deal, since they have no activation fee.

There is no point in these gift cards. They are a scam pure and simple.
They limit were you can buy and if you dont use them before they expire the issuer keeps the funds.

The gift giver is out and the recipient is out.
I just used two on the final day that they were good.
The expiration date was not shown on the card. Thankfully the company gave me a heads up that they were going to expire.

CASH can be used anywhere anytime.

Hey yours was a bargain, snicker. American Express charges a full 10% activation fee. It’s $10.00 for $100.00 card.

It’s legal! FNC had something about gift cards. Store cards are not allowed to charge activation fees while MC and VISA and AMEX are.

Anyone can use your gift card.

Write a check if theft is an issue.

It won’t be long before the banks charge a fee to cash a check. They are already making moves to this end. I say go cash.

Regarding the cards, I can afford the fee and my kids can use them for whatever they want without the hassle of cashing a check or having the cash in the mail stolen. Although, I did send 3 separate payments of $1000.00 each to my oldest daughter last year.

This is because they can’t show the sale of the card until it is used on a transaction

Which, if true, is really dumb. The best thing that can happen to the vendor is for the card to never be used. Or is there some busybody agency that collects all that money, like with an idle bank account?

If you are afraid of it getting stolen in the mail, send a USPS money order. Less than 2 bucks for th4e fee, and they can cash it right where they receive it.

Cash is king.

It is part of GAAP, it is seen as simply exchanging one piece of currency for another. In other words, the way GAAP sees it, it is like exchanging two ten dollar bills for a twenty. They can’t count it as a sale until the twenty is exchanged for an actual good or service. You can’t count the exchange of currency as a twenty dollar transaction because you have actually not increased your net.

Like I said, it is a convoluted mass of rules.

AFAIK Amazon gift cards no longer have expiration dates. In any case, if you apply an Amazon gift card to your Amazon account, the balance never expires.

They limit were you can buy

Plenty of vendors sell through Amazon.

What's really miserable is being behind somebody cashing in or buying lottery tickets, and buying cigarettes; until you remember that without those two items the store probably couldn't make it.
