Not true. I would agree with that about every other movie he played except for Rooster Cogburn.

I would suggest you rewatch Red River and The Searchers.
They also tend to remake because they are now bereft of ideas. So they make and remake and remake every classic movie almost never improving on the original.
I haven’t seen this True Grit but already what I’ve seen and read makes me think it’s much darker and drearier than the book or movie ever was. I also have a weird feeling that the Bible-quoting Mattie is being turned into a vengeful, hateful right-wing teapartier. I got this idea from an article in the New York Times this week. In fact, Mattie is a God-fearing, fine girl and woman with lots of character, moxie and humor. In fact, if I remember the book correctly, she supports Al Smith for the presidency!

I just came back from seeing True Grit and it was very good. Jeff Bridges is great. Matt Damon is bad. The girl who played Mattie steals the show. I think she was fantastic.
The story is as solid now as it was when John Wayne did it. The dialogue, scenery and overall feel of the movie was excellent.
I’d give it an 9/10 but Matt Damon brings it down a peg. 8/10

Especially Red River. That classic was full of great performances including The Duke at his all time best. Quiet Man wasn’t half bad either.
Has any read the book by Charles Portis? Is the LaBeouf character lame in it too? You’d think, given that Campbell was the weak link in the original, they’d be extra careful with the casting in the remake unless the character is intentionally lame.
I think I'll go see it at the drive-in tonight...take a little bottle:)
I’m a huge fan of the Duke and think - even among freepers - that they don’t understand his talent and charisma. It saddens me because he was a fine actor, a distinct personality and a great man.

It’s one of my favorite books - really, read it, you won’t regret it.
LaBeef (I can’t spell French) is sorta the middle man in the book. He and Rooster have a real competition going and much of the comedy comes from their wrangling. I think the casting in both films is probably a mistake (surely with Glen Campbell and perhaps with the rather unmanly Matt Damon).
Are you talking about this review? Don't put too much stock in just one review. Ebert is pretty liberal and his review is not nearly that cynical.
