Target Cashier Didn't Charge Me For DVD. Should I Tell Them?
The Consumerist ^ | 12/21/2010 | Chris Moran

Posted on 12/21/2010 8:13:48 AM PST by Tazzo

When I got home, I noticed that the receipt showed that the cashier had only charged me for one of the sets. I did not notice if she put both under the scanner so I don't know if it is a misread or an error on the part of the cashier.

There was a woman in front of me who caused her nearly a half hour of grief over coupons and sale prices, so she was a little distracted when she got to me. I don't want her to lose her job, but I feel the need to call and tell them that I was not charged for all my items.

It is only a $20 DVD but I feel a twinge on honesty. I would love to have the opinion of your readers.

My wife, just turned around and went back in and paid for it. No questions. No hemming or hawing. No worrying about someone that made a mistake. She wouldnt be able to sleep that night over knowing she “stole” an eight dollar shirt.

Your wife refused to take advantage of good luck. She materially hurt your bet worth.

Should have divorced her.

Well one time they actually gave me an extra bag, by the time I had to drive round trip back to Wasilla of about 22 miles just to return an extra bag of two bottles of Snapple and a couple of candy bars it would have cost me a good chunk in fuel cost, I drive a big Silverado dually and gas is around $3.50 a gallon up here.

What's to prevent you from keeping the extra bagged items, and your receipt for what you purchased that day, and returning the unpaid for items the next time you DO go back to Wal-Mart (or wherever...)?

You're spending a lot of time here justifying yourself. Honesty in your dealings, whatever the cost, would go a long way...

No one here thinks you need to drive 20 miles in -40 temps to return something... just take it back or pay for it the next time you shop there.

Normally I’d say go back in and pay for it but I absolutely hate going into these stores around the holidays and after.

Give $20 away in charity if your conscience feels guilty.

A water heater is totally out of context, that DVD probably cost all of $.50, especially if it was made in Mexico.

1) If you are a democrat, that answer is “No”, you are entitled to it.

2) If you are a conservative the answer is “Yes”, return it.

3) If you are a republican, wait and see what everyone says on this thread and then go with the choice that will make you most liked.

You wise up. You’re the one with his teeth in his mouth and his face hanging out like that.

Exactly, based on how much I spend at wallmart on a monthly basis if I walked out with a DVD without noticing I failed to pay for it and managed to get home with it (doubtful). I doubt I’d go through the trouble of raising the issue. It’s not worth my trouble for a 7-10$ dvd. I have walked out of the store with merchandise only to return to pay for it when I determined it wasn’t included in the bill. I’ve also left items at check out which I’ve paid for, and not bothered to come back for them.

It really all depends on the nominal value of the item.

There have been quite a few times in my life that I went back and did the right thing. I remember that those times happened, but I don’t really remember them individually.

There was also a day that I kept what wasn’t mine, allowing the clerk to face the music on their own at the end of the day. The details of that one are still stuck in my craw 30 years later.

A great way to put it!

I agree this is the best solution. It makes the store whole, allows the writer to have a clean conscience and protects the cashier’s job.

Of course, if Target is like most companies, they will probably spend $50 in labor trying to figure out how to account for the mystery $20 that came in the mail.

That’s absolutely correct. I once ordered a pair of cheap ($25) headphones from the online Sony store to use with my MP3 player. Sony sent me two pairs but only charged me for the one. I called customer service and offered to send the second pair back. The customer service rep. told me to keep the headphones and thanked me for being so honest. I never forgot that.

So Wal-Mart’s transgressions against you in the past, which I assume you made them fix, justifies your stealing from them today?

She had missed it and rang it up, then she wished me a heartfelt “Merry Christmas”!

Was I wrong?

Yes, you should immediately return to that store and chastise the clerk about the insensitivity of using the word "Christmas" - with a capital "C" no less!
