This week, parents of children attending a failing school in Compton, Calif., submitted a petition to district officials demanding that the public school be taken over by a charter school company. A new law in California allows parents to attempt such takeovers. This is the first time the law has been invoked. The only other state with a similar law is Connecticut, but other states are considering similar legislation. From member station KQED, Krissy Clark reports.

Compton is familiar territory to old Ben. Who is behind this I wonder — most Compton parents can barely make a peanut butter sand-which.

I wish them great success. If they can make this work for the good of their children, perhaps other parent groups give it a chance too.

Is it, now? I spent a lot of years there, and even graduated from Compton High. Lots of old memories for my clan in that town.

Glad to see these parents invoking the new law to have their school improved. The schools there weren't all that bad in my day, but I know that they're little more than gov't holding pens, now.

Me too, though I haven't been there very much in the last 30 years.
