Both of my children could speak in complete grammatically correct sentences when they were two. One was reading at four. I never talked down to them, and read them many books.

Babbling?

Crawling?

I also read a LOT to my kids.

And we’d point things out in the pictures, talk about what was going on, what might happen next, they’d ask what the words said.

My two oldest were reading at four as well on the closer to five end of it.

We got my oldest daughter the Little House series for her sixth birthday, which was just where she was reading wise.

That said, kids ARE capable of far more than most adults give them credit for. I think this is a real disservice to the children.

A four year old is capable of giving an accurate and factual account of what they see.
