My favorite Civil War Custer story was apparently McClellan and train were sitting on their horses by a river discussing how deep it may be, if they should cross, what to do - what to do.
Custer rides his horse out into the river, it is only a couple of feet deep and says, General, this is how deep the water is.

Sort of like Patton in Italy. Funny how the best generals are always just a little off kilter.
