Iran’s Other War (against the Bahais)
Pajamas Media ^ | 12/9/2010 | Michael J. Totten

Iran’s most repressed religious minority is also its largest. Members of the community are routinely imprisoned, frequently executed, banned from universities, and ruthlessly repressed economically. Tens of thousands have been murdered by one regime after another. The current government—the Khomeinist “Islamic Republic”—goes farther than any other by vowing to crush these people wherever they live and erase them from the face of the earth.

There are only six or seven million in the entire world, and their spiritual home is in Israel. I am not, however, referring here to the Jews, but to the Bahais.

Their world headquarters is in Israel, and they came during Ottoman times from Persian lands. The nation-state of one of the world’s oldest religions now hosts the holiest site of one of the newest, and the nation where the Bahai Faith was born vows to destroy the nation where the Bahai Faith had to migrate.

The strikingly different treatments of these people by Iran and by Israel infuses the looming showdown between the Middle East’s two most powerful countries with even more moral clarity than it already had.

The mullahs hate the Bahais because their spiritual head claimed to be the return of the 12the imam, while his teachings reject Islam and the Koran. Bahaism is in a sense an evolution of Islam into something peaceable and vaguely new agey, before that term was current.

They believe in a world union, via the UN and are “internationalists.” The folk rock guys Seals and Crofts were adherents. “Summer Breeze” etc ... the opposite of the Iranian regime, that’s for sure.

Muslims just hate everyone.

They are like the school yard bully.

you’re right. What have the barbarians contributed to modern man over the last 1300 years?

Nothing except redefined hate.

I worked with an Iranian-born lady years ago. Her family left Iran and came here to the US at the time of the Revolution because they were afraid they would not survive; they were Bahai. She never mentioned being persecuted under the Shah but they were very aware of the Muslim’s attitude towards them.

The Baha’i Faith grew out of Shia Islam in 19th Century Persia and is the newest of the world’s religions. It is monotheist, believes in the equality of men and women and holds that in the next age, more revelations of God’s will are to come. Muslims regard them as heretics since their very existence challenges the Islamic doctrine of the finality of Mohammed’s revelation.

The appearance of post-Islamic religions is the ultimate challenge to Islam.
