The information is a couple of months old, but it's in the news since the rifle just got deployed to Afghanistan.:

New rifles give Army snipers in Afghanistan needed range

It's a USA Today article, so we're only allowed a headline and link.

Nice but I would rather have Carlos Hathcock.

Is this still .308 Winchester, or did they upgrade to .338 Lupua?

Wow! An Erector set that acts as a Long Distance Paper Punch.

Paul Mauser would be proud I think.

There are likely some of his earlier designs firing back at us from the natural redoubts that are Afghanistan.

My dad brought a 30-40 Krag back from Viet Nam as a “war trophy”- best I can figure the Navy took some to China during the Boxer Rebellion. The NVA got some and were using them against us and at least this one Springfield Armory weapon made it home full circle.

In urban warfare I'd rather have my Marlin .22mag with a nine power scope. That's what the Israeli's use in urban conflicts.

I prefer the 98 Bravo with the B.O.R.S. System myself: 98bravo

Won’t get far with all those pointy corners getting caught in the undergrowth.

Surely someone could design a good bipod sans the external springs ?
Not only are they an aesthetic eyesore, but a pair of class A crud catchers as well.

From the USA Today article:

Prior to the Afghanistan war the Army spent about $400,000 per year on
sniper equipment; it spends about $19 million now.

Some of the best tax money spent. Makes me smile when I file my taxes.

The two recent sniper episodes on History Channel covering Vietnam
and Afghanistan/Iraq are something to watch.
