Al Pacino has told how he was nearly fired from his iconic role as Michael Corleone in The Godfather and said he hasn't defeated his alcoholism, but 'just doesn't drink'.
The 70-year-old Oscar winner also told CNN's Larry King how Marlon Brando's support helped keep him in the career-making Godfather film.
Talking about working with Brando and nearly being fired from The Godfather, he said, 'Brando was a source of inspiration.
'It was unnerving playing with him in Godfather. But he was good to me. He was sensitive to me.
'They thought I was wrong for Michael and they were going to let me go.
'Francis said, 'You're not cutting it for me kid'.
'What kept me in was the restaurant scene.
'They kept me after the shooting.'
Talking about his battle with drink, he said, 'I didn't defeat it that's all you can say. I just don't drink.'
Scarface (Tony Montana) and Dick Tracy (Big Boy Caprice) together made Al Pacino a caricurture of himself.
really ....my grandfather was born in Naples
and had red curly hair and light eyes.
my wife’s Sicilian grandmother had blue eyes.
yeah some Italians look like ship wrecked moroccans and some do not.
I just found out, that Cazale was in a relationship with Meryl Streep when he passed away.
I’ve read elsewhere that it was because Pacino was so stiff and bland. Hard to believe, given the scenery chewer he became.
Obama is the answer to why the Corelone’s NEVER put Fredo in charge of the family.
Marone! She was pretty.
Considering who/what has “trotted thru” Sicily, you could encounter many surprises from 1000s of years of its history....
Mostly agree, but I'll give him credits for "Scarface" and, less famously, "Sea of Love."
oops... caricature.
“In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns.”
Pacino did a masterful job in actually evolving on screen into the godfather.
He had everything down including the “Face of Death”.
Cazale was a master dead long before his time.
Perhaps the greatest flashback scene in history, Right after Michael has Fredo killed, we see Fredo as the only one who was proud Michael joined the Marines, and Sonny slaps Fredo’s hand away when he tries to congratulate Michael. Michael has completed his journey into Hell.
Thanks for heads up. I dont think I have seen any trailers on it yet(and get to cinema a few times a week)
Like things that Val Kilmer does - rest of cast looks good
"I can handle things, I'm smart, not like everybody says. Not dumb, I'm smart!"

I grew up around the corner from the Gambino family (the source for the Godfather). They lived on Club drive in Massapequa. The real consigliore was a waspy guy who looked a lot like Duvall. I won't tell you his name but it was the same as a particularly feisty CW General.

FWIW...Jerry Sienfeld lived just west on Riviera Drive and the Baldwins lived just east on Clearwater.
The dickens you say! Didn’t realize John had passed, and a long, long time ago too. RIP John / Fredo / Stan.
But it was clear he never got over Apollonia, look how happy he was when he was dancing with her at the wedding. He became cold after that. I think he only wanted to get back with Kay because it was all he had, I still don’t know why Kay agreed.
and dont forget the goths visigoths and huns that invaded the whole of the penisula.
