About two-thirds of United States senators were millionaires in 2008, according to a recent analysis of politicians fortunes conducted by the Center for Responsive Politics.
The research organization, which also tracks political donations, recently analyzed the assets and liabilities of lawmakers based on 2008s required annual financial disclosures. The center estimated each politicians net worth by adding together the lawmakers range of assets and then subtracted the range of liabilities.
The midpoint of that resulting range was used to rank the politicians.
In the Senate, 68 legislators were estimated to be worth at least $1 million, led by Herb Kohl, a Democrat from Wisconsin, who was worth an estimated $214,570,011 in 2008. The average net worth across the Senate was $13,989,022.98.
Here is the centers list of the 25 wealthiest senators from 2008:
In the House, 240 legislators were worth at least $1 million. The richest representative was likely Darrell Issa, a Republican from California, who was worth an estimated $251,025,020 in 2008. The average net worth across the House was $4,670,831.

Alan Grayson #6, WTH did he do. WTH did any of them do to garner such wealth. Geez, Im in the wrong business.
Personally, the only "wealth list" I would be interested in seeing is the one that measures the net-wealth of Congressman/Senators before they came into office, versus what they've made while they've been in office.
The ones that worry me are the ones who became rich after they were elected. That's the problem.
Why, do you think they've buried their money in their backyards?
Whatever investment vehicles or assets that wealth is tied up in, you can be pretty confident that they're generating at least some income from it, perhaps significant income. No one keeps a quarter-billion dollars in their mattress.
Reminds me of an old legend about Jack Brooks, the Democrat congressman from SE Texas. When he was first elected, he packed up his belongings in a pickup truck and, Beverly Hillbillies style, moved to Washington, DC. When he retired four decades later, he was a multimillionaire with an ownership interest in every bank in Jefferson County as the story goes.
OTOH, Brooks was Marine during WW II and served in Guadalcanal, Guam, and Okinawa. Patriot and Democrat were not mutually contractory terms back then.
My Senator is too stupid to steal. she is not a millionare. 15K to 50K. Now that is stupid. And no it is not because she is honest. She is a Democrat.
Well, TBH, who else can afford to run for office these days? The crooks in office have priced the cost to run an effective election out of the ballpark (to help keep themselves in office, no doubt . . .).
