Grounded sub's commander sunk
The Sun (UK) ^ | 11/27/10 | STAFF REPORTER

Posted on 11/27/2010 12:27:37 PM PST by SmithL

THE naval officer in charge of a state-of-the-art submarine when it ran aground off the coast of Scotland has been relieved of command.

Nuclear-powered HMS Astute was the first of a new class of cutting-edge sub being put through sea trials when it became stuck on a shingle bank off the Isle of Skye last month.

It was stuck for several hours and had to be pulled clear when the tide came in.

Naval chiefs announced that the man in charge of the vessel, Andy Coles, 47, was yesterday stripped of his command of the submarine altogether. He will remain with the Royal Navy and will be handed another post.

No decision has yet been made over whether he will face a court martial over the incident on October 22.

;I am amazed Jimmy Carter was a sub captain."

He wasn't a captain. He wasn't qualified. And, I'm not even sure if he ever spent a day at sea. He may not have.

"The only thing LESS career enhancing than a ‘collision at sea’ is running aground."

Ain't that the truth. You can bump uglies with the admiral's wife, and still be in better career shape, than you would be if you run her aground.

"ut he did qualify for subs and was accepted into the Nuclear Program."

I didn't think that was right, but I looked it up, and sure enough he did. I had been under the impression that he went to nuke school, but never qualified. I was wrong. He did, apparently.

I am amazed Jimmy Carter was a sub captain.

Jimmy Carter was a Navy Academy graduate and picked up for Admiral Rickover's nuclear submarine program. Carter was never a captain of a nuclear submarine.

that he went to nuke school, but never qualified
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
He qualified on the Diesel Boats but I don’t think he ever served on a Nuke. He was going to Nuke School and was destined to be an engineering officer on the USS Seawolf (SSN575).
Ok his ‘bio’ says He was interviewed by Rickover and made LT 1JUN52.
As a JG he was on the precom crew of the USS K-1 in 1951 and went on to be the XO, Engineering Officer and Electronics Repair Officer...he qualed for CO on this tour.
He was detached (by Rickover) 16OCT52 and went to the AEC in Schenectady NY then on to the Navy Reactors branch in Washington DC to assist in the design and developement of nuclear propulsion plants.
on 1MAR53 he was on the precom crew for the USS Seawolf (SSN575) and ran the training program etc for the prospective crew members. While on this duty, his father took ill and eventually died - Carter resigned to run the family business and received an Honorable Discharge on 9OCT53 then requested and received a transfer to the Retired Reserve on 7DEC61 as a LT.

So, it may have only been ‘book smart’ but he obviously wasn’t a dummy when it came to Nuke matters.

“Carter was never really a President either.”

But he tried to play one on TV. Unfortunately, he wasn’t very good at that either.

I have been using the place mats from a lobster roll shack as charts for years. They're laminated, you see, and easy to wipe off.... and when one is not using them for navigational purposes, they are still ... you guessed it ... great place mats.

Sorry, gotta hafta decline your kind offer of a three-hour tour there, Cap'n.

Something I appreciate about our military is that it will remove incompetent people. Who, I wonder, was removed from rank at Fort Hood for permitting a known jihandist to murder our soldiers?

I am amazed Jimmy Carter was a sub captain

I would be amazed too, 'twere it true. He was an engineering officer on a sub, not slated for commanding officer school, and not a good officer by most accounts.

In an unusual move, she is being permitted to continue on to an assignment in the Pentagon.

I rest my case. And yes, my wisdom is very finite.

Don't be too hasty. I have always returned with the same number of charter passengers that I began the cruise with. Of course, they ain't always the same passengers.

BTW if you have an interest in Rickover, you might want to read “Running Critical”

I've been looking for a good one on Rickover. A friend of
mine was one of the first picked by him to command a Skate
class. He's told me some very interesting stories about the
man, especially the “interview” stories. We ate at a restaurant
together a couple of years ago and the chair he sat in must
have rocked back and forth five inches. He balanced it and
exclaimed, “Oh God! He's come back to haunt me!”
