Cool!
By coincidence, I was just recently re-reading for the thousandth time the cover of my old Mothers album, ‘Freak Out!’.

Those were the days, when you bought a new album and could spend an hour looking over the cover.

“Suzy Creamcheese, what’s got into you?”

In 1971 I visited London and remember hearing on BBC that Frank Zappa had once again been voted world’s greatest rock guitarist. It was funny, because in America it was always Eric Clapton in those days. Zappa is one act I wish I had seen during my rock concert years.

By the way, I still have my mini-CD single of ‘Peaches En Regalia’ from the very first days of CDs. (Remember those CD “singles”?) It came with the same cover as Hot Rats. I have absolutely no way to play it, of course - - not that I’d need to these days since the song is in my computer MP3 collection.

FRegards,
LH

Now believe me when I tell you that my song is really true
I want everyone to listen and believe
It’s about some little people from a long time ago
And all the things the neighbors didn’t know
Early in the morning Daddy Dinky went to work
Selling lamps & chairs to San Ber’dino squares
And I still remember Mama with her apron & her pad
Feeding all the boys at Ed’s Cafe!

Whizzing & pasting & pooting through the day . . .
(Ronnie helping Kenny helping burn his poots away!)
And all the while on a shelf in the shed:
KENNY’S LITTLE CREATURES ON DISPLAY!

Ronnie saves his numies on a window in his room
(A marvel to be seen: dysentery green)
While Kenny & his buddies had a game out in the back:
LET’S MAKE THE WATER TURN BLACK

We see them after school in a world of their own
(To some it might seem creepy what they do . . . )
The neighbors on the right sat & watched them every night
(I bet you’d do the same if they was you)

Whizzing & pasting & pooting through the day . . .
(Ronnie helping Kenny helping burn his poots away!)
And all the while on a shelf in the shed:
KENNY’S LITTLE CREATURES ON DISPLAY!

Ronnie’s in the Army now & Kenny’s taking pills
Oh! How they yearn to see a bomber burn!
Color flashing, thunder crashing, dynamite machine!
(Wait till the fire turns green . . . wait till the fire turns green)
WAIT TILL THE FIRE TURNS GREEN!

I saw him in Providence at a small joint (The Heartbreak Hotel I think). Of course he had the ever present Winston going. One of his staff guarding the stage was an enormous dude with a shaved head. I watched him smoke too, then watched him put his lit cigarette behind his ear!

After the show we waited out back where the bus was located. I was leaning against the wall near the door. It opened and the big bald dude led the way and cleared the path.

He didn't see me against the wall and when Frank came out I patted him on the back and shook his hand.

"Good show Frank."

Well, I seen the fires burnin’
And the local people turnin’
On the merchants and the shops
Who used to sell their brooms and mops
And every other household item
Watched the mob just turn and bite ‘em
And they say it served ‘em right
Because a few of them are white,
And it’s the same across the nation
Black and white discrimination
Yellin’ “You can’t understand me!”
‘N all that other jazz they hand me
In the papers and TV and
All that mass stupidity
That seems to grow more every day
Each time you hear some nitwit say
He wants to go and do you in
Because the color of your skin
Just don’t appeal to him
(No matter if it’s black or white)
Because he’s out for blood tonight

You know we got to sit around at home
And watch this thing begin
But I bet there won’t be many live
To see it really end
‘Cause the fire in the street
Ain’t like the fire in the heart
And in the eyes of all these people
Don’t you know that this could start
On any street in any town
In any state if any clown
Decides that now’s the time to fight
For some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree
There ain’t no Great Society
As it applies to you and me
Our country isn’t free
And the law refuses to see
If all that you can ever be
Is just a lousy janitor
Unless your uncle owns a store
You know that five in every four
Just won’t amount to nothin’ more
Gonna watch the rats go across the floor
And make up songs about being poor

One of my more shameful transgressions as a yoot was when I snuck under the stage at Asbury Park Field House and stole Uriah Heep’s six pack. That was in 1971. (Or maybe I’m thinking of Climax Blues Band at Bucknell in ‘74..?) Man, those years are a fog. Anyway, “stage security” back then was lax, to say the least.

"One of his staff guarding the stage was an enormous dude with a shaved head."

That was "Baldheaded John". I believe they were singing about him on "Dong work for Yoda" on Joe's Garage.

Have you ever been to see Zappa Plays Zappa? If you get the chance, don't pass it up. They always put on a great show! We're going to see them next month.

Check out their site. (Lots of good videos there too!)

Personally, I'm still a fan of the original Mothers of Invention. (From Freak Out through Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh.) When those Mothers were broken up, the joke wasn't funny anymore, though Zappa made a few interesting things in the years to follow.
