This list is a joke. It starts with an awful “thrill-omedy” and ends with one of the most overrated borefests ever, the fake-looking/character-free FX parade by the overrated Carpenter.
Blair Witch 2?
Did the authors bother to, like, SEE any of these, or were they too busy watching Girl Interrupted for the ninth time?
What! No POLTERGIST (Still the most terrifying);
NOSFERATU (silent);
I WALK WITH A ZOMBIE;
BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (terrified me when I was 6 years old!)
THE HAUNTING (1964)
FREAKS.
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (Lon Chaney version)
The Night of the Hunter 1955 Robert Mitchum
***the Beast with 5 fingers 1946- Peter Lorre***
OOH I forgot about that one! Definite thriller!
FWIW, the commercials for the original W.W.&tC.F gave me nightmares, mostly with the girl turning into a giant blueberry, and probably the oompa-loompas, too. It wasn't too bad when I actually saw it, but it did seem like Gene Wilder was trying to kill the kids, especially after kicking the first one into the lake.
The only thing scarier would be the sequel.
_Ghost Story_. (Slow, brooding, developing fear, leading to a conclusion.)
Carpenter’s _The Thing_.
Carpenter’s _Prince of Darkness_. (Oh, man, if they let Old Scratch get loose...! Good use of quantum physics to try to sell the horror and make the unbelieveable believeable. The willing suspension of disbelief, and all that.)
_The Descent_ (Most heart-wrenching, horrifying ending I can remember.)
_Jeepers Creepers_ (Especially the first one. Even though it was a touch “campy,” it was really quite superior, and it’s one you can see over again and still enjoy. A classic horror flick. It actually draws the viewer in, and shocks him.)
_The Legend of Hell House_. Roddy McDowell. (Sp?)
_The Others_ (This movie will surprise you in a similar way to _The Sixth Sense_.)
_The Sixth Sense_. (Everyone was surprised.)
Agreed on _Salem’s Lot_ (Best vampire movie made.)
...can’t think of others. ENJOY! (You can tell I don’t go for gratuitous gore, or cats thrown in front of cameras to scare the audience.)
That boat ride scene in the original Wonka can be pretty scary for a kid.
I do like the inclusion of movies that are designed to mess with your head rather than being simple gore fests. In the Mouth of Madness is very good along these lines, as are The Shining, The Ring and Rosemary’s Baby.
OTOH, some of these definitely don’t belong. Blair Witch?
And where’s Psycho, Wait Until Dark or Night of the Living Dead? Can you call A Clockwork Orange horror? If so, it belongs here.
Quatermass and the Pit
Saw it in ‘67 as a kid, never seen it since but remember parts and it’s still creeps me out.
“I can out-read you. I can out-think you. And I can out-philosophize you.”
DeNiro was just downright scary. Mitchum was great, but DeNiro just out-crazied him.
Nice to see another vote for Wait Until Dark. It usually makes most lists.
If that's the one with the clown peering out of the sewer, that, Alien, Jaws, and Silence of the Lambs are probably tops on my list.
It was much more terrifying than any shark could ever be. As I said, this "clown" was practically omnipotent and chose to use its powers to murder children. Can you think of anything more horrifyingly one-sided?
Plus the attitude of the adults was part of the problem. The adults stood by and allowed their children to be bullied and abused; no wonder they couldn't see the "clown!"
Of course the finale was a bit of a let-down. The super scary "clown" turned out to be a giant spider. Who's afraid of spiders?
“The Boys From Brazil”
Not “supernatural” but scary nevertheless.
If you want to go there, "Is it safe?"
How do your teeth feel now?
