Open-carry vs concealed carry. (vanity post)

A recent post by marktwain about an open-carry experience of his got me thinking. Some states are open-carry, some are concealed carry.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Which method would you prefer in your state, and why?

If you OC and you are alone, you have to have increased situational awareness so that someone doesn’t sneak up behind you and grab your gun and run off with it or threaten you with it.

Concealed carry is for when you’re venturing out amongst the public.

Open carry is for when you’re out in the wilderness.

Very easy for a Nevadan to distinguish between the two: You’re either in one of Nevada’s rarely encountered towns or cities, or you’re out walking around on the surface of the planet Mars.

Open carry in a public setting is for people who have no other legal option. Where concealed carry is permitted, open carry is a stupidity.

You probably ought to answer the replies you've generated.

I'd be interested in your answers, myself.

I’ll disagree, for the reasons I previously posted. Here in Las Vegas, I’ve OC’d in public on the Strip and (more often) in the downtown (Glitter Gulch) area.

Tourists ran away from me screaming and/or fainting, while police swarmed me to the ground...... oh, wait; nothing happened except a thumbs up and some casual glances. Police noticed, no reaction.

Don’t go to Costco.

” Why shouldn?t most Americans carry?”

Because most americans are liberal or too brain dead to be walking around with loaded weapons. It would be a scarey society if it were to happen.

” Why wouldn’t it work? Why shouldn’t “most” American carry?”

Again, we should have the right. It our constitutional right. Been to the southside of town or Walmart lately? Would you “encourage” gun ownership on some folks. I think we are fine right where we are at with these laws. I ccw and am an ex LE0. Not crazy about everyone toting guns. Just us that choose to and that aren’t crazy.

“Don’t go to Costco.”

You got that right. Fortunately, Sam’s Club and WalMart of OK with OC and get my business. I cut up my Costco card after the Scott tragedy and the way Costco handled it.

Both should be allowed by law. I have a concealed permit. I’d hate to get arrested if my shirt accidentally came untucked in front of a cop.

Of course you are an ex-LEO and you developed that fine sense that you can make the correct judgment, but most of the other shleps do not have your fine brain or skills or values...

You arrogant bastard, it's attitudes like the one you are showing, that you are somehow superior that make a whole lot of folks sick.

Now that is a best reason I've seen on this thread.....

If you CC here in OK...and a LEO just happens to get a peek of your pistol...you could be subject to arrest.

I prefer OCing to CCing when weather allows it. In PA we have a lot of transplants from NJ and NY and they bring their warped views of the 2A along with them. The only way this will change is slowly over time.....when they see good people carrying firearms on their hips.

IMO, OCing is a public service for gun owners everywhere.

(It should be noted that I do not OC in urban areas or at ATM’s at night.)

That said, most Americans shouldn’t “carry” at all.

If a street thug came up and punched you in the face, you would advocate someone fighting back with equivalent force, no?

Carrying a gun is no different....it allows for equivalent force to be used against an armed attacker. NOT allowing people to do so is immoral (not to mention Unconstitutional).

Open carry is superior as it is the only option which provides a deterrent to crime. It has shown itself to be less problematic as criminals prefer an easy mark and, unlike the speculation of some, causes criminals to choose other victims who would be an easier mark.

It is a logical fallacy to believe that a concealed firearm creates a deterrent to crime because the perp thinks the victim may be armed while an openly carried pistol makes a person an easy mark and fails to provide any deterrent.

If concealed was better then cops would carry concealed. Instead they choose to display openly to get a quicker draw and provide a deterrent.

Too many LEO's have the belief that only they are fit to be armed. My experience is the exact opposite. In a free country everyone has the right to be armed whether they are viewed as "worthy" of protecting their life or not. Even shoppers at Walmart and on those that reside on the south side of town.

The second amendment exists to protect themselves against those who would take away their right, not just against criminals and nobody has veto power over that, regardless of any laws to the contrary.

Everyone has the right to arm themselves. Thank god. I’m just glad everyone isn’t armed.

Dude...you are so old school with that GI M3...(golf clap)...just keeping the classics alive...;)

I spent my first tour as an EM tank crewman [as well as a couple of other things over the course of four years] school, a few trips abroad in the airplane parts bizness and a sometime career as a newspaper photog intervened, but in 1992 I found myself wearing a suit with US brass on the collars and a shiny pair of butterbars, proving everything I had ever said about incompetent idiot second lieutenants. Unfortunately, I got promoted a couple of times since then.

And when spotted carrying a M1911A1 instead of a Beretta M9, a couple of my young troops made a couple of gentle comments about there not being any more dinosaurs needing to be shot, and something about my resembling an old phart. I responded by telling them I was beginning to think about ripping off their heads and $hi!!ing in their mess kits.

It didn't work. They didn't know what a mess kit was.
