Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - banausic
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 11/17/2010

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

banausic \buh-NAW-sik\

relating to or concerned with earning a living -- used pejoratively; also - utilitarian, practical

Example sentence:

The heiress dismissively declared that she would never have to worry about such banausic concerns as holding down a job.

Extra example: "At the far end was a wooden board on which were hung saws, chisels, knives and other banausic instruments of the trade." -- From Sebastian Faulk's 2005 novel Human Traces

Did you know?
The ancient Greeks held intellectual pursuits in the highest esteem, and they considered ideal a leisurely life of contemplation. A large population of slaves enabled many Greek citizens to adopt that preferred lifestyle. Those who had others to do the heavy lifting for them tended to regard professional labor with contempt. Their prejudice against the need to toil to earn a living is reflected in the Greek adjective "banausikos" (the root of “banausic”), which not only means “of an artisan” (from the word for artisan, "banausos") but “nonintellectual” as well.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I have been politically active locally since early summer. we have a couple of elected village board members who didn’t take the work place violence/harassment class mandated by the state....all of us volunteers have to take it, SO I started a petition basically saying that they should take the class or resign......got up to 70 signatures......been ticking off these two board members. Been having some fun.....Monday night at the meeting the room was FULL when I read the petition and announced that I now was up to 70 residents of the village who had signed....they voted to hold another two classes at who knows what cost so they can take it. next meeting I will ask the cost of this and how many others will be taking it at this time. should prove interesting.

I am enjoying myself immensely.

Good for you!

For those of you wondering, I have been able to get Beck’s Spooky Dude series from last week on watchglennbeck.com, when the bandwidth here is OK. I usually have to let it spool up for a while, then watch some, lather, rinse, repeat.

Excellent analogy he is making about being the guy with the lifeboat, not the people making a sign on their attics.

oh, it involves mega horking. this same crowd got elected over the controversy involving my fire department......they basically lied and conned the entire village........huh! I am making the rounds setting them straight on that mess in addition to getting signatures. no one from that party will get elected to village office next year. one of them that did did not even live in his district and has since had to resign so one seat sits empty. three left.......one has semi turned and started to think for himself...the other two are trouble with a capital T.....got the latter one on another issue that same night......her "committee" issued a letter in the name of the village committee to the local gossip rag and it was loaded with factually incorrect statements about my beloved squad......you should have seen me call her out on it. in front of a packed room. she was livid....she ordered me to her little committee meeting to answer to her......huh. they switched the meeting to tonight, but I stayed out of it, since I already ticked them off. I smell the same rats who created a huge fight with the village and the active duty firefighters and squad members behind it, but now they are after MY squad. we are fighting back. gotta love village politics. the offending article.....I informed them they had factual errors in their comments about the squad and that we were now fielding calls from elderly citizens asking if we were still going to be there for them as it looks like the village is throwing us out. probably not the reaction they were hoping for.

Today he discussed junk touching by TSA. Have you experienced it yet? Xshub is flying out of bwi to Austin tomorrow and is wary of what he’ll be subjected to...

I believe the revolt has started......we have had enough already. Don’t touch the junk. And what about that woman who’s blouse was pulled down and they exposed her in public. This has got to end......ban and give extra screening to all Muslims.......it WAS Muslims who committed the terrorism, not little three year old girls.

That’s if you decline the scanner. I’ve gone through the scanner many times. They just put them in at Pittsburgh.

The next successful Muslim terrorist isn’t going to look like a Muslim. It will be a Western convert, like a Johnny Walker Lindh. Or a non-Arab Muslim from a Central European state.

Going through the scanner many times, yeah, so have i. But i think it’s worth worrying a bit over excessive radiation if you travel frequently and you are reliant on the mensa candidates who are our TSA agents, to set the levels at which the machine radiates. This system is flawed, and a much better system is that which Israel/el al employs, which Glenn spoke about yesterday. They rely on people not machinery. All El Al screeners are ex-military.

and whoever he/she is, is going to have explosives tucked into a body cavity or have PETN, neither of which would be detectable by current methods. will they then do body cavity searches or INCREASE the level of radiation to x-ray/MRI levels so as to look at our INNARDS as well? where does it end?

is there any doubt that if Bush had instituted these policies, the Dems would be caterwauling shrews as they were over the Patriot Act?

kinda reminds me about how the media always hypes the homeless when it’s a republican in charge, but ignores it when it a democrat.....same thing, different subject....same as sex scandals...if it’s a dem it’s ok, if it a pubbie all hell breaks loose.
