Just ran across this and thought that some of you historians would like to see it.
Check out the 'history' of this flag on the provided link.
BTW: Sold for over $32,000!
I have a 95% Confederate 1861 Enfield British musket captured at Antietem. It came back to Illinois as war booty from US Grant’s campaign in the West. Any FReepers buyers are welcome
Thank you very much for for posting this. I can get all worked up about our flag. I will drag everyone in my house and the next door neighbor's to see it here.
Your post is a great companion piece to the story of the bicycle riding young patriot and the support he received.
If I had a couple more bucks , about 32,000 more, I would have bought this flag for the Cavalry Museum I will build one day. I already have a bugle.
I hope this flag was purchased by by an organization that might display this treasure as a teaching exhibit.
I drive my grandchildren crazy telling them about my Gettysburg visit.
"There I was, on the same ground Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was determined to hold at all cost. "Bayonets." ......
As do I my friend.
I believe that is the flag flown over Fort McHenry, correct? Another little aside about that flag, when we added the two new states in 1792 (Kentucky and Vermont) we went to 15 stars and 15 stripes. Adding a stripe also. Once it was understood that would be unwieldy by adding an extra stripe, it was decided to just add stars and keep the 13 stripes to represent the original colonies.
