Gay-rights activists in Minnesota thought 2012 would be the year they could finally make a serious push for gay marriage in the state, but a surprise Republican takeover of the Legislature has them back on the defensive instead.
Tom Prichard, president of the Minnesota Family Council, said Thursday that his group will push for a statewide vote in 2012 to ban gay marriage and civil unions in Minnesota's Constitution. Previous efforts to do so in 2004, 2005 and 2006 met a firewall in the strongly Democratic state Senate, but that liberal majority crumbled in Tuesday night's election.
And despite a vow by new Republican legislative leaders to focus primarily on job creation and spending cuts when they take over in January, the likely new chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said there's "a lot of bottled-up desire" in his party to finally put gay marriage before state voters.
"The statement I'll make is that there's a keen interest by a majority of the members of both chambers to define marriage, and to allow the public to do so," said Sen. Warren Limmer, a Republican from Maple Grove.
Prichard said it doesn't matter to his group if lawmakers take up the debate in 2011 or 2012, as long as it's on the ballot by 2012.
Even if Democrat and gay-marriage supporter Mark Dayton prevails in the unsettled governor's race, he wouldn't be able to block a statewide vote: Constitutional referendums from the Legislature neither require a governor's signature nor can they be vetoed.
For gay-rights supporters, the Democratic loss of the state House and particularly the state Senate was a shock.

The incoming members of the GOP majorities in the state House and state Senate have made it clear that taxes and job creation are Priority #1 - but as the article states, there is gonna be momentum towards putting a constitutional amendment on the ballot for 2012.
Although not personally acquainted with any of the GOP freshmen, I suspect that most, if not, all, are conservatives and wouldn't be opposed to putting a gay marriage ban on the ballot for 2012.

The horror! The horror!
Boo-hoo
Why are these sick perverts so obsessed with getting married ? Aren’t they happy just doing their disgusting act behind closed doors ?
Wouldn't matter. All it will take is for one liberal activist masquerading as a judge to overturn the will of the people. And I am sure there are quite a few of them in Minnesota.

No...they will not be happy until not a single person uses the word "disgusting" to describe their act -- which of course will never happen -- hence they will never be happy.
It is a great move, I just hope it is not in vain.
Look at California. We pass a Proposition: The court says we need a Constitutional Amendment. We pass a Constitutional Amendment, the court is currently in the process of saying “oh wait, we lied — it doesn’t matter WHAT you do, we will legislate from the bench!”
Best of luck and I really hope your experience is better.
I believe that is why they keep pushing for everything normal people have. They want to believe they are normal too. They are not, they are a statistical minority, and no amount of feel-good liberal/socialist legislation will change that.
My extended family has homosexuals in it. I have a couple of homosexual friends too. I accept them as flawed people. I do not hide them nor sugar-coat them or their situation from my kids. (teenagers) Far from it. I'm very open with my kids about these people - the problems they face, the choices they make and the consequences of their actions. In their relationships there is a 100% rate of problem relationships. There are diseases and medical problems. There are social and work issues. There are trust issues. There are family issues. Yes, "straight" people have these issues too. But there is a 100% rate of at least one of these (actually two or three at a time) with the homosexuals I know. I don't hide this from my kids. They get to see the direct consequences of these choices. None of the homosexuals I know are leading what I, or they, would call happy, fulfilling lives. We don't need more government, more legislation to cure this. There is no cure. These people will never be, can never be, happy or fulfilled.

YAY
The poor babies are in shock? Oh dear.
They think that if they can legislate it into being "normal" that it will actually be "normal"... but it will always be what it is.
I suspect that the gay marriage thing is primarily the work of professional activists who are a front for left-wing agendas. The gay lifestyle is not family-oriented. It’s mainly about partying and having lots of sex and they know it. That in addition to being a mentally and physically unhealthy way to live.
>>> I suspect that most, if not, all, are conservatives and wouldn’t be opposed to putting a gay marriage ban on the ballot for 2012.
Won’t matter much either way in the long run. The issue will ultimately be decided in the Supreme Court, as the federal constitution trumps local initiatives.
The push is to mandate recognition of gay marriage under the Equal Protection clause. That is highly debatable, but I don’t see any way around the Full Faith and Credit clause.

Very few fag men live past the age of 45. Statistically a normal male will have somewhere between nine and 17 sex partners in his life. It is not uncommon for fag men, even ones who are “Married” or “Committed” to a partner to have 100 different sex partners a year with documented occurrences of fags having as many as 1100 different sex partners in a single calendar year. Marriage does not carry the same commitment in “Gay” marriages it does in normal marriages, something the fags and the MSM are desperately trying to hide
Placemark.
Let the state marriage referendum resume, now that the moral anarchists are out of power.
Who are the real haters; those who warn against the obvious, inevitable consequences of certain actions, or those who encourage others to dive headlong into a culture of death and disease?
Oh no!
Agreed with everything you posted. The much larger picture of the leftist agenda includes an attack on America’s morals. Our Republic will not stand an immoral populace. Thus the constant push for the gay agenda. It is an attack on America.
The attack on right minded people is always about “legislating what happens in the bedroom” or some nonsense, as if it doesn’t affect anyone else. Actually it does. What is the total sodomite population as a percentage of the whole? Two percent? But it’s all over television, and news, and all over politics. It’s IN politics. It’s now something we have to defend our children from. It’s being taught in the schools. Tell me how that doesn’t affect anyone else. Sodomite behavior may be a mental illness one is born with, but most are harvested from a large group of confused kids who are no longer taught to be men and women. I believe the confusion is created on purpose, as a way of planting a crop, in our schools.
People who define themselves, DEFINE themselves, by their aberrant behavior should not get to redefine the language to call what they do “marriage” in any way. That would be akin to having serial murderers redefining their “act” as a lifestyle choice to be normalized.
