Finally I want to see a Movie again!
As a mega-fan of the book I think the original follows the book pretty closely. For me, the problem was always the performance of Kim Darby. Aside from that, it is a lighthearted western with plenty of good old-fashioned dialogue and great performances from the likes of Strother Martin, Jeff Corey and Robert Duvall. Wayne is fabulous as the sloppy, one-eyed Marshall.
This Coen thing looks about has lighthearted as Fargo. Where’s the jokes that were so important in the book and original movie?
FU Matt Damon...Boston punk.
Can’t stand that whole Mass. Boston accent, prep-boy attitude, etc.
Sorry, I just had to post that. It's what this Texas girl remembers from many years ago when she thinks about a New England accent.
Yeah I know, ya’ll laugh at us too!
It’s a much edgier, darker interpretation of the original (think Miller’s Crossing or No Country for Old Men). Making the same movie, only updated doesn’t interest me personally. I welcome a different telling of the story.
Anyway, my favorite John Wayne films of all time:
Rio Bravo
The Searchers
The Commancheros
Big Jake

The original ‘True Grit’, directed by Henry Hathaway, was pure self parody on Wayne’s part. And the Coens are much better filmmakers than Henry Hathaway who was a 2nd tier studio director with no personal vision. ‘Kiss of Death’ is as good as he got and that was mostly due to Richard Widmark’s performance.
Simply the best and most moving from the heart. The Duke played himself well, and with his own mortality watching him as he acted, it affected his performance in a way few actors can ever come close to.
Jeff Bridges claimed that he loves Obama and what he’s doing is “fantastic”. Sickening, isn’t it? I’ll give him a pass for what he did in Tron and Seabiscuit, but I dont like giving my time and money to libs.
Unforgiven and Josey Wales. The next modern western classic is still Tombstone.
If the trailer is any indication, the acting is horrid.
The dialogue sounds pretty crappy too.

Personally I like El-Dorado better. We could have a brew and easily discuss that untill dawn.
After watching the chemistry between those two in "Ride the High Country", I think the improvement would have been measured in orders of magnitude.
I agree. Loved the Johnny Cash song in the trailer, too.
Pinging silent_jonny! Remaking a John Wayne movie may be blasphemy to him, but this looks pretty decent. SJ- I know it take 6 years for video to load for you, but check this out (if you have a free 6 yrs. ;))
Off topic, everyone used to tell my dad he looked just like George Carlin. After seeing this trailer, everyone is going to tell him he looks like Jeff Bridges in True Grit.
I know all about the Coen Brother movies. But if they turn this into something dark and unpleasant, they are seriously misinterpreting the book - which is a delight and a classic. The original film (despite its flaws) understood the book’s merits.
Wrong! No self-parody involved. The Duke is brilliant in the film - hilarious and tough and strong. Just watch his light touch during the early trial sequence or when he charges Robert Duvall and his gang on Old Bo and then rides Mattie (the admittedly awful Kim Darby) to safety. And Henry Hathaway was a fine director. He directed How the West Was Won, one of the best westerns ever.
I never cease to wonder at the lack of film/theatre taste among freepers.
Yes, we have “Open Range” was great.
oh no! I don’t want to hear that -
In the trivia section of IMDB, there used to be a story that a furious John Wayne chased Dennis Hopper with a revolver and Dennis had to hide in his dressing room. I checked and it seems to have disappeared after the death of Hopper. It had been there for years.
It still says that Wayne hated Kim Darby and had many other choices for her role, like his daughter or Karen Carpenter.
