Word For The Day, Thursday, November 11, 2010 - ineluctable
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | Veteran's Day | Thursday's sub

Posted on 11/11/2010 4:29:38 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

ineluctable \in-ih-LUK-tuh-bul\ : adjective
Not to be avoided, changed, or resisted : inevitable

Example sentences:
Even the best athletes have to contend with the ineluctable fact that they will grow older and must someday face opponents who are younger, faster, and stronger.

"The breadth and sweep of Ms. Mearns's dancing is extraordinary here, and she has an apparently instinctive sense of how to imprint a movement momentarily on the eye, even as it seems part of an ineluctable flow."
-- From an article by Roslyn Sulcas in the New York Times, September 27, 2010

Etymology:
Like drama, wrestling was popular in ancient Greece and Rome. "Wrestler," in Latin, is "luctator," and "to wrestle" is "luctari." "Luctari" also has extended senses -- "to struggle," "to strive," or "to contend." "Eluctari" joined "e-" ("ex-") with "luctari," forming a verb meaning "to struggle clear of." "Ineluctabilis" brought in the negative prefix "in-" to form an adjective describing something that cannot be escaped or avoided. English speakers borrowed the word as "ineluctable" around 1623. Another word that has its roots in "luctari" is "reluctant." "Reluctari" means "to struggle against" -- and someone who is "reluctant" resists or holds back.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Michelle Bachman doesn’t need to be tethered to a position where rocks will be thrown at her every time she opens her mouth-she needs to remain free to say what she believes. Hensarling is used to going around the sides to get to the heart of the matter.

That family got it-they understood the insult of being patronized-I only hope they understood it in the context of affirmative action.

She was just featured on Cavuto as saying nothing was wrong with Social Security, that’s how crazy she is. I have to add my pet peeve is people who pronounce it “sossal” instead of “social” when it’s in front of the word security. It drives me nuts, yelling at the TV or radio. My kids say “You know they can’t hear you, right Mom?” A+ for you and I hope the car is ready soon.

Don’t forget to get rid of any and all unions for federal or any kind of government employees! If JFK could enact them by EO, the next republican president can get rid of them the same way.

I’m trying to figure out how your temperature gauge makes your car doors stick.

It doesn’t-it is just a coincidence-my car just never has only one gremlin at a time...

As a former state employee who belonged to one of those unions, and was the “representative” for my unit (same as a union steward) for 2 years, I agree completely with you-the lack of motivation and laziness they defended was atrocious then (1970’s-80’s), but I can only imagine what it is now. Civil service unions were so disrespected by private workers and employers that Kelly field was called the home of the eight hour loaf-a parody on the slogan of the Butterkrust Bakery in SA...

I’m off to put a couple of pork chops on the grill and steam some cauliflower for dinner...

Probably the same reason that my door unlock button yesterday unlocked everything BUT the driver door.

Michele did the right thing, much as I would hope that Sarah Palin would stand aside for Marco Rubio. Xshub had me halfway convinced but the piece on him on the Weekly standard totally sealed the deal.
