Mongoose will kill cobras more often then cobras will kill mongoose. The mongoose are born snake killers and are part of their prey species. They have extremely fast reflexes and are very intelligent, and know how to use the snakes weaknesses against it. They keep their eyes completely on the snake and watch its movements and can almost calculate exactly when the snake will strike. Also mustelids like the mongoose seem to have some kind of resistance to snake venom. So even if the snake managed to strike the mongoose say in the leg I doubt it would kill it. However a bite to the head would probably be fatal for the mongoose.
Man is one of the cobras' most dangerous enemies. Unlike the ratel and mongoose, whose small numbers and chance at loosing the fight can actually create a natural balance, man captures the Cobra with relative impunity. Cobra skins are one of the most highly prized of the exotic leathers, commanding prices as high as two-hundred US dollars. It is said that "a cobra hunter always returns victorious" (because if unsuccessful, they do not return). Since cobras naturally maintain high populations in Asian countries, no protective legislation has ever been proposed. Only in Egypt, where the Egyptian Asp is revered as a religious symbol are cobras protected in any way. Due to their deadly nature, import/export of cobras is closely controlled in every civilized nation in the world. Many types of cobras, usually with their venom removed, are available through various black markets around the world. Banded cobras, or asps, are fairly readily available through the south eastern United States black market. Saudi royalty is said to have a thriving stock of cobras for use as pets, but this is unconfirmed.
Here is the link to the Mongoose Fighting a King Cobra
Riki-Tiki...
a GREAT vid!!!! One wouldn’t think a mongoose would stand a chance, but they win almost every time!
Rikk-tikk-tikki-tikki-tchk
Beck takes out Soros!
Ordinary domestic cats - as in pets are quite good at subduing snakes - even rattlesnakes. Just about as efficient and talented as a Mongoose.
mmmm cobra!!
tastes like chicken
That's NOT a king cobra. That's a spectacled cobra.
HUGE difference...
Oh yea?
The one in the video or the picture above.
I ask because I found the picture of the cobra for this thread.
So I could be wrong but the video could still be right.
Which are you talking about, and how can you tell the difference?
When the cobra strikes it has its hood open which slows it down and will give the mongoose the edge. Put a mongoose up against a Fer-De-Lance and it’s good by mongoose.
As for the difference between the two snakes, it's almost like comparing a bobcat to a Siberian tiger. The spectacled cobra - probably a sub-species of the Indian cobra (Naja naja) - is only about 5 or 6 feet long as an adult. The king cobra, however, is the longest venomous snake in the world, with a maximum recorded length of OVER 18 FEET! It's a gigantic monster and extremely fast (with possibly only mambas being faster). It is also the most intelligent snake in the world, and "somewhat" defends its nest. Zookeepers also say it is the fastest snake to learn not to strike a glass window, again revealing its intelligence. And to top that off, it's been known to rear up to five feet from the ground!
Interestingly, because of its huge size, intelligence, and quickness, it almost strictly eats other snakes -- hence its unique genus: Ophiofagus. Fortunately for us, this snake is extremely rare in the wild.
Now if this video really showed a mongoose attacking a king cobra, I would have loved to have seen it.
R.I.P. mongoose...
Have you left a comment for the site that carries the video? Maye you can get them to change the title.
Just suggesting is all.
Besides, I actually like the Chico Enterprise-Record and would prefer not to embarrass them. Their newspaper edition editorial page is a bastion of conservative thought in a college town of fairly liberal opinion. Its conservatism drives the college punks nuts. LOL!
Go Butte County!
OH, this site is from a newspaper in your area?
I just stumbled upon this site a few weeks ago when I was looking for information on the California Judges for the election. He had a whole slew of recommendations that were all Republican and/or conservative. I read some of the comments and, I can see what you mean that some people there really despise this guy. I figured anyone a leftist hates cannot be all that bad.
Anyway, I noticed he also posts videos on his site and that is obviously where I found this mongoose vs cobra video at.
Do you know the guy that writes for this site? I guess his name is Chuck Wolk.
As for me, I actually live out in a remote outpost in the Arizona desert, but I'm originally from Butte County. My parents and sister and her family all still live there, so I'm always "in the loop" regarding Butte County politics (and CA politics in general).
Other than the fella misnaming the cobra, I enjoyed your post.
Sounds like a great site for some future link-posting.
All the best!
Flycatcher
Just so you both know, Chuck Wolk is a Freeper.
His Freeper name is OneVike and he has been a member since early 1998 from what his profile states.
He has many articles that has been posted here at FR. He live in Chico Ca and his wife is a paraplegic. From what I have learned about him he and his wife were in the back seat of a car that went off a country road in MT. They were just dating then, and she was left a paraplegic. They have been together since. From what i have learned the accident happened back in 1987.
I know this because I used to write for the same Chico ER blog he used to write for, Post Scripts. I don't live in the same town, but i have conversed with him via email in the past. He is a real good conservative christian. He is also a pastor who used to write religious articles. I don't know why he quit writing religiously, but when he does they make for are real good reading material.
Lately I understand he has had some physical troubles related to nerve trouble in his neck. I think that is why he does video more often than articles. I guess it is difficult for him to sit in one place too long without pain.
Anyway I thought I would enlighten you on who he is.
As for me, I am currently on probation for taking on a moderator. Do yourself a favor, don't take them on. If you get mad at them just log off and calm down. Some of them don't have a sense of humor. So I lurk and post comments now and then. My comments don't get posted right away though. They need to be OK'd by a moderator. Sometimes it takes a day before my comment gets posted.
Wow, I guess I am off probation.
This is the first time in a year that my comment went right through.
Oh yea! It feels good.
