Brown and Boxer Take California as Republicans Steal House
The Diablo Dispatch ^ | 11/4/10 | Cody Schaaf

Posted on 11/04/2010 10:19:56 AM PDT by Califreak

In one of the most critical midterm elections in recent years, Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer won over Whitman and Fiorina, both by at least 10% while on the national level, Republicans took back a majority of seats in the house, with 239 to Democrat’s 18, and Democrats kept their hold on the Senate, with 51 to 46.

California kept true to its blue roots, choosing Brown over Whitman in a time when the Democratic vote is not the most popular one. His 13% lead over Whitman was predicted, however, as Whitman’s image had faltered with the public in the weeks leading up to the election. Still, Brown’s ability to outsmart his mega millionaire opponent proved that California is still a Democratic state, even when the national view of Democrats is a negative one.

Barbara Boxer, too, took a 10% victory over GOP senator candidate Carly Fiorina, the HP ex-executive, in a race fueled by Fiorina’s own millionaire pocketbook. Boxer’s re-election will keep California’s Senate seat a blue one, as well.

The biggest news, on a national level, was made as the Republicans dominated the House of Representatives in a momentous power shift from left to right in congress. The majority 239 Republican seats will greatly change the composition of the Federal Government in this crucial time for our nation. It is very possible that Obama will struggle with the new GOP majority and that it will cause an overturn of many of the policies he enacted over the last two years.

The Senate, though, kept their Democratic stronghold, but only by a few seats. Their current 51 to 46 lead will perhaps balance the Republican majority in congress, some say.

On a state level, California saw the passage and failure of many critical propositions. The most controversial of them, Prop. 19, the tax and regulate marijuana bill, was shot down as young votes failed to give it the push it needed to win. However, more pertinent Propositions, like Prop. 25, which allows the budget to pass with a simple majority vote, will hopefully speed up the budget process and keep the state out of the budget trouble we saw this year, voters say.

Prop. 23, the controversial global warming law suspension initiative, was shot down by over 60% of voters from both major parties. Most say they saw it as a ploy for big oil companies to keep their profits up in the recent “green” buzz.

Prop. 20 overrode Prop. 27 in a debate over the practice of gerrymandering, a process in which state politicians draw their own district lines to obtain more secure votes. Prop. 20 will take the power out of politician’s hands and put the citizens in control of the districts where politicians represent.

Overall, the 2010 Midterm elections saw big changed in our nation’s political climate. With Republicans dominating the house, the next two years of Barack Obama’s presidency could seriously be affected and our already argumentative government could become even more bogged down. Back at home, California will see how Jerry Brown can perform in this turbulent time of unemployment and economic uncertainty.

Oh, the language is rich.

Dems take California, but Republicans steal the house.

And Obama says that his party was battered, as if Republicans ran up and punched their challengers in the face—assault and battery.

We won our gains fair and square!

"Take" vs. "Steal."

No slant there, eh, Cody?

Cody didn't get the memo.

We no longer talk about Republicans 'having temper tantrums' or 'stealing' elections.

We now simply ignore reality outright. An example headline:

"Republicans Dealt Crushing Blow, Burdened With Many New House Seats."

Maybe when he gets to college. For now, he's just a High School writer with an assignment that is due...

Yeah! No oil companies would profit from the taxation of carbon emissions, right?

Sounds like a lot of marijuana smokers also voted......

Will the last taxpayer leaving California please turn out the lights!

It’s going to be fun watching Jerry Brown struggle with the state bond rating and other wet-blanket items.

Bingo....in one sense, I’m almost glad that Meg lost. She’d be fighting the Dem controlled legislature..and when Cal goes under..they’d attemtp to blame her.. This way..it’s clear..Californians got the government they deserve..and there will be NO fedbailout..the piper has to be paid this time...and it’s gonna take a bankruptcy to cut all those insane state pensions..existing and future..
