LED over LCD. “if” price was the same.
There is another variable for us, our $3500+ entertainment center will accomodate a 42” Panasonic Plasma with 1/8” to spare, and that’s including the door and mounting track removed.. that’s why we have the 40” JVC..(doors were removed for that TV to fit).

http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/hdtv/led-vs-lcd.html

This comparison has become muddied lately with some LCD TVs showing very concentrated black levels. Local dimming LED TVs have been the best in the past.

ADVANTAGE: 1st Local dimming LED TV technology has an advantage in both contrast and black levels. 2nd Some recent LCD TVs. 3rd Edge Lit LED TVs

COLOR ACCURACY
With white LED backlights the difference between the two technologies isn’t very significant, but with RGB colored lights or a color wheel to affect the backlight color the LED TVs have an advantage in displaying realistic color.

ADVANTAGE: White backlight LED TVs and LCD TVs with flourescent backlight are nearly equal in color accuracy. Colored backlight LED TVs trump both.

VIEWING ANGLES

Answers to this question will change frequently. What seems to have the greatest impact now on the viewing angle topic is the quality of the clear glass panel on the front of either LCDs or LED TVs. The thicker, and higher quality this glass panel, the better the viewing angle and somewhat detrimentally the worse the glare. Anti glare technologies do prevent glare but the inhibit picture depth and viewing angles. Lately we have viewed some LCD TVs with very good viewing angles and picture depth though this was never previously the case. We have also viewed very expensive thin edge lit LED TVs with poor viewing angles showing contrast and black level degradation at a mere 30 degrees off center.

Local dimming LED TVs will naturally perform better with the light coming from directly behind the screen.

ADVANTAGE: Local dimming LED TV, then LCD TV, then Edge Lit LED TV. The big variable in all 3 is the quality of the front glass panel which adds depth, good viewing angles and glare. Anti glare screens will always have less depth and poorer viewing angles.

FAST-MOVING VIDEO PLAYBACK
Displaying fast moving video is a function of the response time and refresh rate in LCD and LED televisions. The type of backlighting in the TV has no effect on the reproduction of fast moving video. You will want to compare response times and refresh rates when making a purchase decision. The new 120Hz, 240Hz, and 480Hz rate features all act about the same in our experience depending more on the manufacturer than the stated Hz rate in effectiveness.

ADVANTAGE: Even

Why Is Target Selling a 40-inch HDTV For $298?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (November 14, 2010) — Since the Black Friday ads began leaking out a week ago, few ‘doorbuster’ deals have received more buzz than Target’s posting of a 40-inch Westinghouse 1080p LCD HDTV for $298.

Retailers traditionally offer deep discounts on the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), better known as Black Friday, the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season. But the price for the Westinghouse flat-screen is roughly $250 less than the regular price. (Amazon.com and Target now carry the set for $549.99.)

Additionally, most 40-inch, 1080p LCD HDTVs cost more than the regular price for the Westinghouse set, model VR-4085DF.

Westinghouse’s soon-to-be $298 40” HDTV.

Best Buy’s posting of a $59 Toshiba Blu-ray player has gotten some attention as has other retailers deals. But few consumers thought they would be able to buy a 40-inch 1080p HDTV for less than $300 this holiday season.

Clearly, Target is trying to make a statement to woo recession-weary shoppers — and Westinghouse, which has yet to make much of a dent in the TV category, appears to be as well.

So, what’s the deal with this set?

Well, it’s a relatively new product. Amazon.com doesn’t even have a consumer review posted at its site; it says the set has been available since October 31, 2010.

(One review at Target.com gives it five stars out of five. “I just picked up this TV and couldn’t be happier. This is the perfect TV for the living room. The picture is great and you can’t beat the price. I have tested viewing the TV from several angles and have had no problems.” However, one review is hardly a consensus, or arguably, even an objective viewpoint.)

The flat-screen TV has a 60 Hz screen refresh rate, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, 8ms Response Time, three HDMI inputs and it’s wall mountable.

Nothing spectacular there, but the price certainly is.

Black Friday: 10 Tricks to Getting a Great Deal!
By Swanni
http://www.tvpredictions.com/black10ways111810.htm

Washington, D.C. (November 18, 2010) — Target says it will sell a 40-inch LCD HDTV for under $300. Walmart says it will sell a 32-inch LCD HDTV for just $198. And Toys r’ Us says it will sell a 32-inch LCD HDTV for $249.

These are just some of the incredible deals that retailers will offer on High-Definition TVs and related high-def products on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26).

However, this could be the most competitive Black Friday ever — thanks to the economy and smaller inventories at retail stores. It’s quite possible that some of the discount prices will be available for one day only — and may include restrictions on time and supply.

And with the economy in trouble, surveys indicate that bargain hunters will likely turn out in even greater numbers on the big day.

So, how can you make sure that you don’t get shut out?

Based on information from Consumer World and other sources, TVPredictions.com has compiled a list of 10 rules for landing that great deal on Black Friday, the traditional start of the holiday shopping season.

And here they are:

1. Read the Ads — In Print & Online
Consumer World suggests that you carefully review your local newspapers on Thanksgiving Day. Usually, they will be stuffed with Black Friday ads and coupons. Bring them with you on the big day. Plus, many retailers are offering special Black Friday deals at their web sites. Don’t forget to check them out 24-48 hours prior to the big day. (Also see Rule #6)

2. Evaluate the Deals
Don’t assume every “deal” is a deal. Compare the “Black Friday” special price with the HDTV’s normal price before buying. You can do that at various e-commerce web sites such as Amazon.com and BestBuy.com. You may even find a lower price online.
_______________________________________________________

3. Buy a Good Product
A low price doesn’t guarantee a high-quality television. Do some research and read product reviews at sites such as CNET.com. If you’re not familiar with the product’s brand name, check out its customer service record with organizations such as the Better Business Bureau.

4. Look For More Discounts
Some stores issue coupons or rebates on high-def sets and other products such as High-Definition DVD players. Find out if the discounts apply to the Black Friday specials.

5. Come Early
Some stores will offer special prices if you come in at a specific time, such as between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. Check out those Thanksgiving ads for “time restricted” specials. Also, this year, some stores are holding pre-Black Friday sales.

6. Beat the Early Birds
Some Black Friday deals at retail may be available at the store’s web site. Check out the site in the wee hours of Friday morning and you might save yourself a trip to the store.

7. Check the Return Policy
Before buying, find out the store’s return policy. Consumer World says some stores discourage returns by imposing restocking fees or placing frequent “returners” on blacklists.

8. Get a Gift Receipt
You can make a return easier for gift recipients by asking the store to place a receipt in a gift box. Without it, the store may not accept it.

9. Use the Right Credit Card
Some credit cards offer free benefits such as a return protection guarantee or purchase points that can be redeemed for other products. When you’re buying a big-ticket item like a HDTV, that could pay off.

10. Save More With Price Guarantees
After buying the high-def set, keep your eye on the TV’s price at other stores in the next month. Some stores will give you the difference between your price and a competitor’s price during the holiday season.

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Whether it’s time for an upgrade, replacement, or just something new, most of us develop a household full of old electronics.

Televisions, cell phones, computers…It’s all about having the latest and greatest gadget.

If you’re not using the outdated electronics lying around your house, drop them off at a local retailer that will recycle them, and one even rewards you for your old items.

Popular retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Wal-Mart will take your gadgets and recycle them on your behalf.

Target, specifically, accepts cell phones, iPods, and video games, and will give you a return on your aged investment.

“Depending on the condition of the item, we’ll go ahead and give you what we can or what we will appraise it for. You’re also welcome, if there is no value to it for some odd reason, we can recycle it for you properly,” explains Simone Rion with Target.

After receiving your electronics, Target will approximate the value and give you a Target gift card in return.

The good news here, you’re getting money for items you probably weren’t using anyway, just in time for the gift giving season.

“You’re welcome to give [the gift card] to anyone, it’s transferable as long as they have it in their hand, absolutely fine,” encourages Rion.
