Didn't popular music peak about 1978?

Posted on 10/30/2010 8:07:08 AM PDT by big black dog

I was just thinking that while sifting through some old cassette tapes I have.

And top 40 radio pretty much went tango uniform in the 90s, so there's no way conveniently sample anymore what I am sure stinks.

Yeah, real ‘music’ disappeared years ago. I’m glad I was able to hear what it sounded like when I was a kid back in the 80s.

I thought music died the day Jon Bonham died.

The newest music I own is “Physical Graffiti”, so I guess you’re right.

You Whipper Snappers don’t know nuthing about real music. Why I remember listening to Guy Lombardo, Patti Page, a young guy named Frank Sinatra. Now that was real music, then came along all that rock and roll noise and it was all over.

Good point. 1979 is the year Rock n Roll slew the Disco beast. So, I would say it was around that time.

Come to think of it, the best of new wave petered out around 1982 or 1983. So, that is a better estimate.

Peaked in 1986.

Agreed. It slowely died after that. I tuned in at some point and heard "Gansta Rap" on the radio. I switched to Brasilian and general Spanish music after that. POP went to hell and I had alternatives.

Check my homepage for some links to some amazing pagode if you're interested in hearing something different.

Cheers.

It's so boring to declare the death of popular music, especially when that "death" predictably coincides with the end of one's own prime taste-forming years.

Plenty of truly great records were made after 1978, some of them quite popular.

From observation, your milage may vary: 60’s music was mostly about rebelling and some sex. 70’s music was sex, drugs, rebellion and lots of guitar riffs. 80’s music was more sex, some rebellion, lots of silliness and lip syncing. 90’s music seemed to be angst filled, gender neutral ‘I don’t want to grow up’ drivel which turned me off. I don’t know about the music from this decade; except for country music which seems to poke fun at the whiney celebs/PC. Country is more patriotic. ‘75-’85 was my favorite decade for music.

I don’t know.

Blind Guardian released a good album this year. And I liked Slash’s solo record.

Helloween’s album of reworked songs from their back catalog was fun.

"Didn't popular music peak about 1978?"

No. Good music is always being made each and every day.

Yes, not to mention you got older and your taste didn’t shift with the trends.
Me too!
Most of the stuff is arhythmic junk.
There is some good music and talent, but it’s not in any one genera.

I moved on to light jazz and really enjoy it.

As much as I hate Bono's politics, U2 was the last rock band. That was the end of it. It petered out and died in the mid 90's after a long decline.

I tell you what, if you could go back in time to around 1968 - 69 and turn on the radio, the constant stream of good music would blow you away.

Young punk. I still remember the smooth song stylings of greegorian chant.

Thou hast insulted the honour of thee fine muscians which hath appeared whenst thou was but a yearling.

Have at you now, affection’s men-at-arms

Bach, Bethoven, and Mozart were not unlike Gods which hath brought music upon faerie wings and thus rocked mightily.

All serious music experts would agree music peaked with the release of the 1982 "Vacation" album by the Go Go's. Although there were other various good releases through the remainder of the decade, music afterward could never quite measure up. And then the industry just quit trying.
