I don’t remember him in The Longest Day.
He was in the Battle of the Bulge as the young inexperienced lieutenant who was captured by the Germans. He started as a green soldier who easily surrendered to the German attackers only to narrowly escape the Malmendy Massacre. When a group of US soldiers lost in the rear German lines found him hiding in the barn. They ask him what they should do, because he was the officer. One soldier suggested maybe surrender to the Germans. By now, the lieutenant is much hardened and motivated to fight, replied, “surrender, never surrender.” In the last scene the soldiers and the lieutenant would meet up with a surviving tank (commanded by Telly Savalas) at a gasoline depot to stop a German tank column headed by Robert Shaw.
