William Seward criticizes the pro-slavery policies of the Democratic Party
Grand Old Partisan ^ | October 25, 2010 | Michael Zak

Posted on 10/25/2010 7:28:30 AM PDT by Michael Zak

On this day in 1859, Senator William Seward (R-NY) said:

"The Democratic party is inextricably committed to the designs of the slaveholders... The history of the Democratic Party commits it to the policy of slavery. It has been the Democratic Party, and no other agency, which has carried that policy up to its present alarming culmination... Such is the Democratic Party... The government of the United States, under the conduct of the Democratic Party, has been all that time surrendering one plain and castle after another to slavery."

The more things change...

Eighteen months later, Seward and Lincoln, the newly elected Republicans, sent the US Navy to Charleston to begin the Great War that killed 600,000 Americans.

It was the newly elected Democrat, Jefferson Davis, who ordered shots fired at Charleston when none were necessary.

Months before Abraham Lincoln became president, rebels shot at Star of the West, a ship sent by the federal government to re-supply Fort Sumter.

Months before? The Confederacy didn’t exist.

I said rebels, not Confederates. Rebels around Charleston fired cannons at Star of the West in January 1861.

If we’re gonna go that route, Union guerillas had been firing on Reb guerillas in Missouri for years before the formation of the Confederate government....at some point you have to decide what’s war & what’s a local disturbance.

"I said rebels, not Confederates. Rebels around Charleston fired cannons at Star of the West in January 1861."

"Wahhhhhh...I said REBELS!" Don't confuse the poor desperate GOP hack with history. He and his ilk will be gone soon anyway, when we once again have a conservative party.

You can smell the fear on them. Conservatives shouldn't tolerate his attempts to pit us against each other and the blacks he is trying to fool are laughing at him and Mikie Steele and their new "Southern Strategy."

It is Democrat trolls who are trying to divide the conservative movement, by equating it with racism, slavery and the Confederacy. True conservatives support decency, freedom and the United States of America

“Eighteen months later, Seward and Lincoln, the newly elected Republicans, sent the US Navy to Charleston to begin the Great War that killed 600,000 Americans.”

Say, you aren’t one of those “neo-Confederate loons” that Mikie Zak is always foaming at the mouth about are you? If you disagree with him that the war was about anything but saving the black folks from slavery, he’ll tar you with all kinds of libel. It’s part of his brilliant strategy to win over the black vote.

Hey, you left out truth, justice and the American way! Tell you what ... pull up a post of mine where I don’t support those ... you got about 10,000 posts to choose from over the last several years.

It was his fort. Well, the property of the U.S. government anyway.

And if we disagree with you that the rebellion was about protecting slavery then you call us a liberal. Who is the bigger boob in the picture? My money is on you.

And for the record PeaRidge is as big a Lost Causer as you are. Just somewhat more intelligent and slightly less rabid.
