How about paper tape?

While I was in the Marine Corps in 1987, I was one of the first people to use a "new" process for remotely ordering materials in a forward area.

I ran all my systems on an old tack-specific computer system called a Green Machine. Then I dumped my data to a paper tape. I took the paper tape to the comm center where they converted the data to magnetic tape. Then I took the mag tape to the radio center where they would send it back to Okinawa via low priority radio transmissions (it took HOURS).

In the morning I would pick up the mag tape reply and take it to the comm center where they would convert the reply to paper tape and then I would take that back to my office and read the paper tape back into my local machine to update my orders and be able to track my equipment, etc...

Boy, we have come a VERY long way!!!
